Something we are not familiar with this season happened in Iowa City, drops by wide receivers.  8 drops on 33 attempts, nearly 1 out of every 4 throws ended in a dropped pass.  The 2 most glaring were on Pryor’s best throws, a 50 yard pass dropped on a dime in the endzone to Posey as well as a 40 yard pass to Corey Brown who was pulled down by his facemask 5 yards in front of the backjudge (who sees nothing wrong) after dropping the ball.

Five inaccurate throws on the day, the worst at the end of the first half throwing late and well behind Washington leading to Pryor’s first interception of the day.  On 3rd and 6 with 8:33 left in the first half, Clayborne gets Pryor's legs causing a high late throw.  Posey is knocked off his spot by the defender well early of the ball getting there.  It's hard to know if the ball was catchable due to the contact on Posey.  Pryor began the fourth quarter on the wrong foot delivering low and wide of Sanzenbacher on the sideline.  On Ohio State’s final scoring drive of the day, Pryor delivered two inaccurate passes to Stoneburner before the dead on pass intended for Posey.

Pryor’s only bad read was disastrous for Ohio State as it set up Iowa’s go ahead touchdown.  Pryor tries to split the zone to Sanzenbacher on 3rd and 10, Iowa’s linebacker makes an excellent play on the ball knocking it away resulting in an interception.

Donatos Pizza is Hookin’ Up One Lucky Buckeye Fan for the Michigan Game

The biggest week of the year is upon us, and to celebrate The Game, Donatos is hooking one fan up with a 42” LCD TV. As a Columbus-based company, Donatos knows how important it is to beat that team up north. With that in mind, they’re giving one fan an upgraded view as Jim Tressel tries to capture his ninth win in ten years against Michigan.

To enter, fans can design their own Beat Michigan coupon which captures the spirit of “The Game” on the official entry form. Entry forms are available at all participating Donatos locations. Attached to the entry form, is a perfect game day meal deal coupon – two large one-topping Donatos pizzas and 25 wings for just $29.99. All redeemed coupons are automatically entered into the contest. A winner will be chosen on Friday, November 26 at 7 p.m., and he or she will have a 42” LCD TV and a Donatos pizza delivered to his or her house before kickoff.

Check it out at your local Donatos Pizza. After all, who doesn’t enjoy watching Terrelle Pryor stiff arm defenders on a TV with a crystal clear picture?

Should OSU Reveiw Iowa Tape?

The greatest week of the year has arrived. While many current Buckeyes (players and students) were fairly young when Michigan last dominated Ohio State, it’s important for everyone to remember – this is the most important game of the year. Jim Tressel does his part each year to let the team know how important this game (and this entire week) is.

However, I found one move by coach curious. Let’s be clear – I don’t question Tressel’s tactics, he’s been one of the most successful coaches in Big Ten history during his tenure. But after the Iowa win, he said that the team would not be reviewing this tape, but instead moving straight to Michigan.

It was Tressel’s dedication to beating Michigan that made fans fall in love with him in the first place, as he “called his shot” at an OSU basketball game before he ever coached a game for the Buckeyes. Almost a year later, he delivered, and found his place in OSU lore. But in this instance, I think reviewing the tape would be pretty helpful.

Several costly penalties, bad turnovers, dropped balls, and execution errors all took place in Saturday’s game. While the team needs to focus on beating that team up north, it also might be worth reviewing the tape to try to ensure that these correctable errors don’t happen again.

Regardless, here’s to hoping for another Michigan win, and another Big Ten Title.

Niners game to be broadcast in central Ohio

Maybe this is old news, but you have to hand it to Fox! I assume this is purely because of Troy starting???

http://the506.com/sports/?tag=2010-week-11

Notice the one outpost of blue on the last map with Cbus at the epicenter. Has anyone ever heard of an NFL game being broadcast based on the home state or alma mater of a particular player playing in that game? I wonder how they go about making a decision like that. Someone must be good at their job! I only wish I could turn in to see it. Hopefully Troy continues his great play and can win another one for the Ohio audience.

Also, does anyone else call him T-Roy? As in "Tee - Roy"? I went to high school with Troy Murphy, and he used to call himself/we used to call him Tee Roy. Just like my OSU buddies call Kroger "Kay Roger".

My Cousin Georgie: Cam Newton is doomed

Hey, Cam, you're in Ala-frickin'-bama. You come from Florida. You stole a laptop. There is no way this is not going to trial!

This choice line from Newton's lawyer, George Lawson, is not exactly confidence inspiring:

"I am a million percent confident that Cam Newton took no money from no one," Lawson said Thursday. "I would suggest to you he knew nothing about any solicitation of any money from anyone."

Let me get this straight, you are 'a million percent confident' that he didn't take money from nobody? Or is it that he didn't not take money from somebody? The fact that you chose to phrase it that way does not make me a million percent confident that you are capable of convincing no one of nothing.

Also, are you suggesting that "he knew nothing" or you "would suggest if...". Why not just state that Cam has no knowledge of money being either solicited or transferred in any way connected to him?

If Cam Newton were to end up being innocent of any wrongdoing it would be a shame to see him go down due to clumsy lawyering.

Amir Williams Officially In The Fold

The last 24 hours have been good to the basketball Buckeyes, but things got even better today, as Amir Williams has signed a national letter of intent with Ohio State. Williams, a 6-10/220 center from Detroit Country Day School, became the fifth member of the class of 2011, joining LaQuinton Ross, Shannon Scott, Sam Thompson, and fellow Michigaan native, Trey McDonald.

Thad Five Part II is now complete and ends with a bang. The #2 ranked center and top 50 player in the nation chose OSU over Florida, but also had Michigan, Purdue, and DePaul in his final five. With Dallas Lauderdale graduating and Jared Sullingerlikely going to the NBA after this season (especially if he keeps up his current play), Williams was a must-get for the staff in their quest to fill out the expected departure in the front court. Williams and McDonald will team up with Evan Ravenel and DeShaun Thomas (hopefully) to provide Thad Matta with some grunt work in the paint next season.

This is a great day to be a Buckeye basketball fan, and imagine how much better things could get if Sullinger and company stay around for another year. Thad Matta continues to prove he belongs in elite company when discussing college basketball coaches, as he brings yet another great recruiting class into Columbus next season.

Buckeye Basketball - Get on the Bus!

Nationally, people seem to recognize how good OSU basketball is. Locally, it will always play second fiddle to football. That's fine, and it's understandable. I just wonder when people will recognize that OSU has premier talent and premier coaching. Thad Matta has never won fewer than 20 games in a season. Dean Smith can't say that. Mike Krzyzewski can't say that. Billy Donovan can't say that.

In the heart of football season, OSU smacked down Florida on the hardwood 93-75. It seems to be attracting little attention outside of great sites like this one. This is not meant to be an indictment on the fans or university – after all football is king in Ohio and always will be. Basketball hasn’t always been this good.

But I think it would be great if we gave the love to our basketball team that OSU fans are capable of giving. After all, when there’s a party going on (and Thad’s throwing a great one) it’s better to be late than never show up.

Go Buckeye Hoops!

Pryor by the Numbers

There are more than a few Terrelle Pryor detractors out there, but consider the numbers:

According to ESPN.com, Pryor is on pace for:

2,563 yards passing with 26 TDs and 10 interceptions, and a completion percentage of 67%. That would put his QB rating at 166.4. Additionally, Pryor already has 512 yards rushing with four rushing touchdowns, and one receiving touchdown.

The year Troy Smith won the Heisman Trophy (2006):

2,541 passing yards with 30 TDs and six interceptions, and a completion percentage of 65%. His QB rating was 161.91. He had 204 rushing yards for one touchdown.

Troy Smith had Tedd Ginn Jr. Beanie Wells, Antonio Pittman, and Anthony Gonzalez.

The numbers are close, and in some areas, Pryor will pass Troy Smith (or already has). Everyone considers Troy Smith a hero, while people constantly criticize Pryor and say that he should switch positions and play wide receiver.

Are people too tough on Pryor?

Not a lot of throws this week, the defense scored twice and Boom had the game of his life at the collegiate level.

Pryor started off the game hitting Posey right on the money into tight coverage.  He followed that up by throwing one away after avoiding pressure on second down and then dumping off a two yard pass on 3rd and 9.  The next two possessions included two incredibly overthrown short passes and Herron dropping a 3rd down pass after Pryor avoided the blitz and rolled out to his right.

Three bad reads, the first is on 3rd and 5 with 8:25 left in the first half.  Ohio State goes with a 5 wide formation, Penn State countered with a linebacker blitz that Pryor fails to read as Sanzenbacher is wide open in the middle of the field at the first down marker.  The defensive end coming inside and linebacker looping outside leads to confusion at the line of scrimmage and a sack is the end result.  The second bad read is on 2nd and 12 from the Penn State 25 yard line, Sanzenbacher is open for 6 early, Pryor delivers late for the interception.  The third bad read is the first bad read for a touchdown that I have seen this season.  Pryor throws deep into double coverage (this is actually the middle and short side deep coverage in the cover three).  Pryor has two short recievers he could have taken for a safe 4-8 yard gain (It was 2nd and 23).  The third deep man for Penn State (the one on the wide side of the field) is even with Sanzenbacher but is closing on Brown short of him to the sideline.  Throwing to Sanzenbacher wide of the opposite hash towards the endzone is most likely the correct read here if you are set on the deep throw.  An excellent effort by Posey who still manages to jump for the tip even with the Penn State defender climbing his back is matched by the effort by Sanzenbacher chasing a pass that is not intended for him.

Not a lot of targets to go around, but Sanzenbacher getting one target that is late when a good throw gets him a touchdown has to be frustrating for all involved.

Pryor put it in the air 13 times, with 8 catchable or dead on, and gets bailed out in a big way by great effort from his top two wideouts on a game changing play.

Ohio State Basketball - Preview and Predictions

This article originally posted on Inside The Shoe

It's finally here! Ohio State basketball tips off tonight at 7:00 against the Aggies.....of North Carolina A&T. Not exactly a marquee match up, but at least the team will actually be on the floor for a game that counts. With the season only hours away from officially beginning, now is a better time than ever to give our faithful (handful of) readers an idea of what to expect this year. If you are new to the site, or for some reason just missed them here are the four profiles I have done on the new freshman to the team: Jared Sullinger, Deshaun Thomas, Aaron Craft, and Lenzelle Smith, Jr. I promise, I will get profiles up on Jordan Sibert and J.D. Witherspoon soon. For now, I want to focus on what lineups will likely be on the floor this year and how I think the team will finish in the Big Ten.

Last year, lack of depth was a major problem for the basketball Buckeyes. This year, depth presents a different problem: Too much of it. Of course, I don't actually think that having an excess of talent is ever an actual "problem" (unless you are Mike Brown, and simply REFUSE to put good players on the floor...or call timeouts, or coach offense, or stand up to your players, etc.). Ohio State will be two-deep at every position, with several players (both starters and backups) having the ability to play multiple positions. There are five positions, so let's begin.

Point Guard

If the exhibition game against Walsh was any indication, the point guard will be run by committee for a while, at least. William Buford can run the point similar to how Evan Turner did last year, but isn't a true point guard. Buford will likely be in contention for Big Ten Player of the Year this season, and will play multiple positions for the Buckeyes. Aaron Craft play a marvelous game off the bench, and my personal hope is that Craft adjusts to the college game quickly and takes control of the starting point guard job by the end of this calendar year. Injuries have slowed Lenzelle Smith so far, but look for him to get minutes off the bench at the end of the season when he is fully healthy.

Shooting Guard

Your starting shooting guard will be resident gunner Jon Diebler. Diebler improved in nearly every statistical category last season, shooting 42% from beyond the arc and 87% from the charity stripe. If he can continue to improve like he does every off season, Diebler will be one of the best shooters in the country. He will be especially dangerous this year because of the inside presence provided by Messrs. Sullinger and Lauderdale (See: Centers). Basically, now that we have centers that can possibly command a double team, that leaves more open looks for Diebler (and Buford, and Lighty, and Craft, and Smith. You get the picture).

Small Forward

Team leader and 5th year man David Lighty mans the small forward position. It is hard to believe that David Lighty was part of the same recruiting class as Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jr. Another player that has steadily improved every (healthy) season, Lighty averaged 12.6, 4 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. He also became a legitimate three point threat last season, shooting 38% from deep. Lighty is also the best on the ball defender on the team, although Craft could challenge him for that title. Deshaun Thomas will likely be the first small forward off the bench.

Power Forward/Center

The starters here are Dallas Lauderdale and Jared Sullinger. They are interchangeable at the power forward and center positions, so I don't really feel it is necessary to distinguish between the two. Sullinger is one inch taller and has about 25 pounds on Lauderdale, but the reach advantage definitely belongs to Lauderdale. If you have listened to basically any broadcast of an Ohio Stat basketball game recently, you have probably heard to announcers mention Lauderdale's wingspan. Their praise is warranted, as Lauderdale averaged just over 2 blocks a game last year. Lauderdale also proved that he was a competent offensive player shooting 77% from the field last season. Many of his points came on dunks and put backs, but the point is that he converts at a high rate, and is a threat to score. Lauderdale went 5-5 in the exhibition game against Walsh, so all signs point to Ohio State having one of the better front courts in all of college basketball.

So the lineup basically looks like Buford, Diebler, Lighty, Sullinger, and Lauderdale. What happens if Buford struggles a little bit running the point, and Craft has continued to look good? If you insert Craft as the starter, who do you take out? Well, this is where the fun starts, because Matta doesn't really have to "bench" anyone. If the Buckeyes are playing a small team, he can sit either Sullinger or Lauderdale to match up with them, or keep those two in and sit Diebler/Buford/Lighty (doubt it will be Buford) to stay with a big lineup and assert themselves, making the opponent adjust to them. He can do the opposite with teams that have bigger starting lineups. Isn't this fun? Here is my version of Ohio State's depth chart, at least to start off:

Point Guard: William Buford

Shooting Guard: Jon Diebler Primary Backups: Aaron Craft, Deshaun Thomas, Jordan Sibert

Small Forward: David Lighty

Power Forward: Jared Sullinger

Center: Dallas Lauderdale

Notice how Lenzelle Smith, Jr. isn't even in the (potential) top 8, and that I didn't even mention junior big man Nikola Kecman (I would be ecstatic if Kecman could turn into Kyle Madsen this season). Remember last year when Evan Turner broke his back (thankfully he was ok. That injury easily could have been very serious) and everyone feared the season was over? The Buckeyes won't rely as heavily on any one player this year, and can withstand the injury bug if it strikes.

Predictions

Ohio State enters this season ranked #4 in the country. I feel that is about right. The Buckeyes lost the National Player of the Year, but reloaded with a great class and brought back all major contributors from last years team. However, one of the three teams ranked ahead of them is Big Ten rival Michigan State, who also bring back some big names, including Kalin Lucas, Delvon Roe, and Korie Lucious. Purdue suffered a tremendous loss in Robbie Hummel, but they bring back E'Twaun Moore, JuJuan Johnson, and a healthy Lewis Jackson.

The Big Ten may be the best conference in the country this year, and it will be a dogfight for the championship. With Hummel, I really feel like the Big Ten could send three teams to the Final Four. Now, Purdue will be good, but I just don't think they are in the same class as Ohio State and Michigan State. But anything can happen, if they just protect their home court against those teams (or even one of them) and let the Buckeyes and Boilermakers beat up on each other, who is to say they can't be in competition for the Big Ten?

The out of conference doesn't look too intimidating, as Ohio State once again draws Florida State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, but the Buckeyes do have a match up with the Florida Gators in Gainesville on Tuesday. Hopefully Matta gets the guys ready for North Carolina A&T, because we saw earlier this week what happens when you take a cupcake game too lightly when Tennessee lost to Div. II Indianapolis. I really don't like Tennessee and Bruce Pearl, if you couldn't tell.

Call me a coward, but I predict that Ohio State and Michigan State tie for the Big Ten regular season title at 16-2. I say that each team will lose on the road to each other, and then each team will lose one game to the combination of Purdue, Wisconsin, and Illinois (all in the top 25, by the way). I will go out on a limb (sarcasm) and say the Buckeyes prevail in the Big Ten Tournament, but that both Ohio State and Michigan State are one-seeds come March. I have seen talented freshman lead Ohio State to the Championship game before, and this year they won't have to lead, just contribute.

The combination of veteran leadership and young talent gets the Buckeyes to the Final Four this season. I don't want to go any farther than that, because that far into the tourny it really does matter who you play. But I do believe that this team is one of the four best in the country, and that they are capable of bringing home a title.
