Quick Bits 3/10 (One new offer, Todd Kelly Jr to Tennessee)

Lorenzo Carter Interview

Newly Offered: Thomas Holley (hudl)

Tennessee Recruiting: Todd Kelly Jr. Is a Vol (Rocky top talk)

One of the most coveted safety prospects in the country decided to follow in his father's footsteps and commit to the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday, giving Butch Jones his most important recruit yet -- for multiple reasons.

With so many University of Tennessee legends and recruits on campus Saturday for the Vols' first spring practice of the season, there was a perfect climate for prospects to get a feel for the Tennessee that used to be.

One of those players whose father played for the Vols during the glory days called Butch Jones today after deciding he wanted to try to be a part of bringing UT back from its current dark days.

Knoxville Webb's Todd Kelly Jr. -- one of the top safety prospects in the country -- attended the Vols' spring opener with his father and made the decision today that he wanted to follow in his footsteps. The commitment gives UT its second pledge in two days -- joining three-star offensive lineman Coleman Thomas -- and he becomes arguably Jones' top [and most important] recruit in his short tenure.

Urban Meyer dines with Tim Tebow during Naples visit (naples news)

Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow reunited on Saturday afternoon in Naples — for lunch.

The former two-time BCS champion Florida coach caught up with his former star quarterback on those Gators teams.

Though its been three seasons since the two were teamed together, Meyer said he still has a special place in his heart for Tebow, now a backup with the New York Jets.

“He’s part of the family,” Meyer said. “I love Tim, and always will. We’ll talk every week, but we should try to get together more often.”

Meyer, who is now The Ohio State football coach, spent the evening signing autographs and addressing nearly 200 alumni on Saturday night at the Buckeyes in Paradise Gala at the Hilton Naples. Tebow spoke a few miles away as part of the Naples Town Hall series at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort at Tiburon in North Naples (See pg. 3A to read about Tebow’s appearance).

Hate too see McDowell and Harris so cozy at Michigan. It makes me uneasy to say the least.

It is so hard to get a read on McDowell. Even when he does his interviews, his responses are toned down and seldom enthusiastic. It's great he's been to Ann Arbor so many times, but I will not have a clue who he's favoring until he commits. Could be us, could be ND, and it could certainly be you guys as well.

Drake Harris is definitely getting comfortable in Ann Arbor. He gives great reviews each time he visits. He also is planning to come up again in a few weeks, after already having visited three consecutive weekends. I just can't believe he's maintaining his soft verbal to MSU.

I think it's you guys or ND honestly.

I think he'll be committed to Michigan by April (Harris that is). Hope I'm wrong though. I know he wants to take officials so I'm hoping he sticks to that plan

I do not think he commits to Michigan by April. At least, I would be extremely surprised. It's obvious we're in a good position and have done a lot for our chances this past month, but he is adamant that he will take his visits. Recruits backtrack on their statements all the time, but I do not think that will be the case with Drake Harris. The earliest I could envision him committing is at our BBQ mid-spring, but even that seems unlikely at this point.

He is going to be an EE, so I would guess at this point he will commit to a school (or potentially reaffirm his MSU commitment) in July or August, before his senior season kicks off.

Yeah you're probably right. I just really don't want you guys to get Harris and lately it seems inevitable so I'm a bit on edge. Especially after some here got my hopes up that Harris chose football just because Urban convinced him too and that we probably led with him behind the scenes.  Needless to say that got me excited about him only for him to be all Wolverine apparently. Long way to go though so I'm just gonna see how this one plays out and try to keep an open mind

I don't want this to come off as anti-OSU so I want to preface my statements with that, but there is a wide misconception about Drake Harris re-opening his commitment. From one of our insiders (the one I trust most) there were rumors floating around that Drake was reconsidering his MSU commitment for basketball 2-3 weeks before Meyer offered. I remember trolling the MSU fanbase when I heard this, because our insider made Drake's re-opened recruitment sound inevitable. Then, perhaps coincidentally, Meyer offered Drake within a few days of his announcement.

Obviously, Meyer offering could have played a role and there's no telling how much, but it was fairly clear he was going to reconsider schools several weeks before OSU came into the picture. I know there was a ton of optimism in the days surrounding it on your side, but if that happened in a reversed-role and I didn't know that Harris was reconsidering before Hoke offered, I would be ecstatic as well. I just wanted to share something that I don't see floating around recruiting forums too often.

You definitely could be on to something there so no I didn't find that to be anti OSU at all. Appreciate your insight though ill never understand your choice of team lol

Haha that's fine, it goes both ways I guess. I don't hate OSU as much as most Michigan fans, yet. I was raised on the east coast and didn't become a Michigan fan until my junior year of high school when I applied. I wound up getting accepted and enrolled here, so my hatred for OSU hasn't had time to fully develop. MSU, on the other hand...

McDowell I think will be a toss up with the teams you mentioned. Think ND may have a slight lead though when he visits there

This is just me being too worried too early, but it really feels like Ohio State does not have a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail right now.  Would anyone agree with that sentiment? I know signing day is forever away, but it just sucks seeing so many other recruits cozy up to programs, and now after our initial four guys, we don't have much happening!

Take a page out of the playbook from the 2013 class. You guys will be fine. To offer my perspective, remember how much chaos there was on the Michigan boards when Lawrence Marshall committed to OSU? It was just after Damon Webb committed to you guys, and everyone was frantically panicking. We had zero momentum at that point. Then, in a matter of days, we got Bryan Mone to commit, you guys lost Marshall, top prospects set up multiple visits, and we seemed to have all the momentum in the world.

On a side note, which LB's do you guys feel most comfortable in landing? We were having a discussion on one of the UM boards about the targets you guys seemingly have prioritized higher than Berger. Are you guys still leading for them, losing momentum, or sitting and waiting for updates? Either way you will end up with an extremely good LB haul, but I care most about this position for you guys because I really want Berger.

Well in Alex I trust and he thinks Berger will be a Buckeye at this point. Though he did say you guys are the top threat so I think that's definitely possible that you guys could get him. But I'd say he's leaning Buckeye. Haven't heard much on other guys lately but I think we're still in a great spot with Booker. Then Garrett and McMillan I'd say we are in as good a spot as possible at this point but a lot can happen and I'd be happy get one out of two of those guys. I'm leaning toward us getting one of two. It'll be interesting to see how LB plays out because I think it's still wide open at this point.

Thanks for the response. If I knew how to upvote you I would. Maybe I don't have enough credits to do so?

I would agree that if NSD was tomorrow, you guys would get Berger. The fact that we've made so much ground on a once perceived Buckeye lock from Ohio is impressive in itself. Hopefully Hoke can keep up the momentum. Also, just something to note, he already has a good relationship with our new LB coach Roy Manning. Manning recruited Berger when he was at Cincy. Nothing groundbreaking, but another small positive for us.

For some reason I feel like Ole Miss will snag one of those top LBers. I've heard smoke surrounding that and nowadays when there's smoke regarding a top recruit and Ole Miss, they prevail.

Garrett is the one and yes Ole Miss is a major player with him.

I totally agree in fact I'm shocked at how dead it's been around here in regards to recruiting over the past couple weeks. I trust in Urban though. I've noticed he seems to work his magic later on while guys like Hoke for instance go hard at the beginning. But I agree I'm ready for things to heat up!

When a lot of your main targets are in the some form of the top 100, it takes more time to build that relationship and get them to commit.  Quite a few of the guys Meyer wants are being recruited heavily by top notch programs and those are the guys that like to announce later in the process.  That would be why it seems to take longer for things to build up, just think of the last couple weeks leading up to and including NSD the past two years.
