Never read anything about Derrick Green not being able to qualify. That would be a surprise. Not saying you're wrong. And it would go a long way toward explaining the staff's cooling down on him. But to the best of my (admittedly limited) knowledge, Green is good to go.
Followup edit: A bit of digging turned up Derrick Griffin maybe going to prep school (TE commit for Miami). Still nothing on Green that I'm finding.
Yeah, I can't access Scout, but it appears to be the Buckeye page that popped up. I have a hard time believing that Hoke and company didn't do their homework on Green. Richrod, I would believe it.

I agree not credible yet. Just because I am curious, if true, how would that affect Green's eligibility? Does that just count as a grey shirt year or athletes allowed to re open their recruitment if they go post grad, as if they ended up going JuCo?
Would be interesting to watch, if true, how this would affect UM's recruitment of backs (Elijah Hood, etc..) in this class if Green would be coming in next year.
Grayshirt means you stay a part of the program, but don't get any financial assistance, can't practice/travel w/team, etc. I would think that he would be able to enroll in another school without penalty after he's done at Fork, but I'm not sure.
The postgame show is brought to you by... Christ, I can't find it. The hell with it...
Grayshirt doesn't mean that necessarily, although that is what happens as a result of grayshirting. Grayshirting is tactic used when a scholarship is not available for a student athlete to enroll at the school of their choice with their current graduating class or current recruiting class.
So the student athlete CHOOSES not to enroll at the university until after Fall semester (or quarter) and then can immediately join the team to practice and will be counted towards the following class total scholarship number.

Green definitely will compete and has a real shot of starting. As of now, there is almost no chance he would redshirt.
And to the question below: No, Vincent Smith's outdoor American football days are complete. He appears to be a pretty good painter, in all honesty, though. That blow to the head may turn him into the next Picasso.

Had JT remained coach, DG is almost certainly a Buckeye. Scholarship reductions, great depth at RB, and the change in coaching and offense all played a role in DG ending up elsewhere. Once Eze was on board, Urban was not interested enough in DG to put in the effort that DG seemed to require. And that's the story of how Michigan got it's running back.
I was dismayed at the Mizzou visit, but to be fair to Eze, he only caused the staff heartache for 2 weeks. Prior to that he was an ideal recruit in every way.
I do not agree that EzE required just as much work to keep. Until like 2-3 weeks before signing that dude was a rock solid Buckeye recruiter. Down the stretch he needed a bit of attention, but that is nothing like 6 months+ of recruiting the best RB in the country against every huge program and maybe ending up with nothing. EzE was committed for a long period of time and required just a little "touch" at the end in a situation where it was really improbable we didn't end up with his LOI. Risk to reward in this situation was not even in the same league to be considered IMO.
I agree with Hail, there doesn't seem to be much to this story. At this time it is only showing up on Buckeye sites. There are also two other things that make me very skeptical of this story. Green is a 3.0 student in high school (google for his gpa if you are curious), which means he just needs a qualifying ACT or SAT score, which shouldn't be to hard for a very determined hard working 3.0 student. The other item that makes me skeptical is that this Michigan staff wouldn't accept a commitment from 2012 recruit Aaron Burbridge until he had qualifying scores. He was an elite level prospect in an area of need, so I don't think their policy would change now. Especially when Michigan's admissions department has proven they don't care what the football coach thinks (see Rich Rod with Demar Dorsey commitment).
At this time last year, the same rumors as with Green were floating on Michigan blogs about Burbridge (commit to MSU). I have no basis to make any conclusion, but I have the highest level of suspicion about this entire rumor.
M Man, I disagree. The situations with Burbridge and Green are completely different. With regards to Burbridge, his grades were always a known issue in his recruitment and his high school coach openly talked about it.
"Committing is not the big thing, it's getting his grades," Herrington said. "If he can get the grades, it would be awesome."
So I think knowing a full year before Burbridge qualified and having his high school football coach openly stating that his grades are a concern has a lot more credibility than an anonymous poster on a sports blog after NSD (Green's situation).
Regardless of the difference, whenever there is smoke present, you never know what could happen. It doesn't help that Alex lent some credence to it with his comment. I guess we will have to stay tuned.
Even though Green may miss this year...don't sleep on DeVeon Smith...he's not bad and OSU would have been after him back in the Tress days. I had a feeling there was more to the Green situation than EzE being told there will only be 1 RB in the 2013 class...IMO of course.

OSU did offer Smith, didn't they? Not saying they pursued him aggressively at any point, but an offer is still a big deal. I agree that he'd have been a major OSU target a couple of years ago.
We would have taken both Smith and Green under Tress (which isn't bad) because they fit his offense better. These guys just are not the greatest fit compared to Eze and Wilson, it's a different style. Nothing against Smith and Green, I think they are going to be solid backs, but Urban brings a different style.
They did...but as so many ppl point out...was it a "committable" offer??? That's the question??? ;-) I personally don't believe in all that but what ever. I for once agree with Steensn...both Green and Smith don't fit the new offense.

In looking for some unrelated info I stumbled upon this Dan Patrick interview with Urban regarding the 2013 recruiting class. Around the 4:30 mark of the interview Urban stated that they backed off of 3 or 4 recruits they could have had but because they may nothave been able to handle the academics they stopped recruiting them. This thread concerning Green came to mind. May or may not be referring to him but makes you wonder who else?
The thing is with Foster and Gibson, their grades were discussed throughout their recruitment. I don't recall seeing anything about Green having issues before or after Michigan/OSU was in the mix for him. I would think that someone, somewhere would have mentioned grades if they were ever a concern.

timmons is a honor roll student, his grades are not questionable. in fact last friday he was in my fiancees kindergarten class reading to her students, she has a picture of ryan on her ipad. he is anxious to get on the field as an uk player. ryan is humble, classy, intelligent, he is involved in community services, is a churchgoer and as fine of a human being as anyone. please do not lump him in with others who have questionable academics.
Do you know his ACT score? (CC: @Waycracken). ACT scores are more indicative of how they'll do in college; high schools tend to embellish grades to best represent their students.
"Validity Of High-School Grades In Predicting Student Success Beyond The Freshman Year: High-School Record vs. Standardized Tests as Indicators of Four-Year College Outcomes"
Why don't you summarize it for me? TL;DR. Sorry, but as a college student, I'd say GPA is far less an indicator than ACT. GPA is inflated and deflated all the time, ACT is a constant. I know 4.0 students that went to terrible schools and have flunked out; likewise, many kids with a 2-2.9 are 4.0 students in college. There's a reason it's called "standardized" and the ACT is a much better indicator than the SAT. The ACT measures intellect, the SAT measures the ability to take the SAT.
Though I would not recommend it, you might want to just read the abstract, as it summarizes the authors' findings quite well and answers some of what you've speculated above.
I don't think he was trying to degrade Timmons. Urban said there were 3 or 4 we're just speculating which ones. The only reason Timmons was mentioned, I believe, is because recruitment stopped kind of abruptly.
well i think recruitment stopped abruptly for a couple of reasons. lack of scholarships for one, and ryan has a chance to be on the field playing as a freshman playing for uk, and he said several times playing immediately would be very important to him. the offense being put in by neal brown is the same exact offense ryan played in at high school. i would suggest he knows this offense better than any current uk player and will start the first game.
Of course this thread ended up talking about Timmons. Anyone think the site should change its name to twelvewarriors.com to include a Buckeye lineup and Ryan Timmons? He seems like a great kid, wish he coulda been a Buckeye, wish him the very best, but I hope the next time he's mentioned on the board is when he scores five TDs against Bama.
Timmons huh? I agree Brooklyn, Timmons has been mentioned too much here. Ryan Timmons was all the rage during the recent recruiting season. Timmons, Timmons, Timmons, was all anyone would talk about. Timmons came up on threads about EZE. Timmons came up on the James Quick threads. Ryan Timmons even came up on some Donovan Munger threads. Now that Timmons is at UK, I wish him the best, but I am hoping the Ryan Timmons craze is over & I don't have to continue to read about Timmons or see the name Timmons on this site again.............Timmons. ;)
