2017 is the 75th anniversary of Ohio State's first national championship season. To honor the achievement, this series will post articles from the Columbus Citizen Journal on the day they ran in 1942.

The Citizen Journal did not run a preview the day of the game. Due to this, let's take a look at the recap by Lew Byrer that ran on Sunday. Think of this as the Instacap. Tomorrow you will get to read the multiple articles that were in the CJ's Sunday Sports section.

The guys in the press box were still rubbing their eyes as 27,259 fans filed out of cold, darkening Ohio Stadium last evening after Ohio State had walloped Bernie Bierman's vaunted Iowa Naval Pre-flight Seahawks 41-12 in as beautiful an exhibition of power and superiority over a really good team as Ohio Stadium ever has seen.

They knew it had happened. They'd seen it. They'd also seen the jubilant Bucks carry Horvath, Vickroy and McCafferty, their three senior members on their shoulders as they capered jubilantly off the playing field.

But they still couldn't believe it possible for an out-weighted, out-experienced team like Ohio State to rise to those heights only a week after winning the Western Conference championship by defeating mighty Michigan 21-7 in a bruising battle.

It seemed too good to take that sort of beating from anyone. And yet the Bucks, playing for the honor of the Western Conference, which they worthily championed, had won almost as they pleased and almost completely dominated play over a 47-man squad which outweighed it about 20 pounds per man.

Nine Out of 10 for Ohio

Some enthusiasts were calling it the greatest Ohio State team ever.

It had just won it's (sic) ninth game in 10 starts on as tough a schedule as a Buckeye team ever had faced. It had won it despite injuries which kept several good men out of action entirely and allowed Tommy James to play only briefly.

But it had shown complete superiority almost throughout over a huge team of veterans including several pro stars.

*Not sure how he scored by losing a yard, but that is what was in the box score.

Governor Bricker revealed last night that the only special Christmas request of Maj. Gen. Robert Beightler, commander of the 37th Division, made up largely of Ohio National Guardsmen, was for a film of the Michigan-OSU game.

"And we're sending it to him," the governor said.
