2017 is the 75th anniversary of Ohio State's first national championship season. To honor the achievement, this series will post articles from the Columbus Citizen Journal on the day they ran in 1942.

The Citizen Journal did not run a preview the day of the game. Due to this, let's take a look at the front page article by Lew Byrer that ran on Sunday. Think of this as the Instacap. Tomorrow you will get to read the multiple articles that were in the CJ's Sunday Sports section.

Bucks Beaten

Ohio State's dream of an undefeated season came to a rude awakening here this afternoon as Wisconsin's Badgers defeated the Buckeyes, 17 to 7, to take undisputed possession of first place in the Western Conference race.

Massillon's Harry Stuhldreher evened the score with Massillon's Paul Brown as his beautifully coached Badgers excelled the Buckeye precision machine at Brown's own game---timing, condition and fine execution of fundamentals.

There was no alibis in the Buckeye camp as far as the game was concerned. The Badgers were the better team on the gridiron this afternoon.

Interesting that Byrer didn't have a mention of the illness that spread through the Ohio State team Friday night. Perhaps it will be covered by another writer tomorrow, or later in the week.

The fans attending this game in Madison should be in for a good one as No. 1 Ohio State takes on the sixth ranked Badgers. If Gameday existed, Lee Corso would have been there putting on the mascot head. In fact, there's a good chance Corso's crusty ass attended this game.

Homecoming Game

The Wisconsin outfit rewarded a record-breaking crowd of 45,000 fans by maintaining their superiority throughout the game.

Buckeye hopes, dimmed during the first three periods, flared for a few minutes in the fourth quarter when a powerful Buckeye march carried the ball for 96 yards to the one Buckeye touchdown.

Remembering former games this season when Ohio's condition told in the final quarter, followers of the Buckeyes were hoping for a come-from-behind victory.

But the Badgers had too much left. They took over and scored a touchdown of their own to cinch the thing.

Amazing that 45,000 set the Camp Randall attendance record.

Badger Victory Decisive

It was a clear-cut Wisconsin victory. Badger press box statistics showed Ohio State leading on first downs 15-to-12 but the Badgers had the edge on net yardage gained 234 yards to 224.

Wisconsin's Elroy Hirsch was the big man on the field. The Badger sophomore outshone both Gene Fekete and Paul Sarringhaus, the Buckeye stars.

He's a loping, leaping dodging kangaroo of a guy who's hard to catch up with and harder to down when you do catch up with him.

Pat Harder, Wisconsin fullback, also showed a lot of class.

From Byrer's description, the Badgers bullied the Buckeyes with their running game.

Pile Up Long Runs

SEELINGER 2 3 0.7 0

Hirsch ran wild to pile up a total of 123 yards.

Runs of 59, 18 and 20 yards figured heavily in Hirsch's production of yardage from scrimmage while passes good for 32 yards brought his total yardage for the day up to 155. And those long runs had a great deal to do with the Bucks defeat.

The 59-yard run set the stage for the first score by Pat Harder, a 14-yard pass to Schreiner accounted for a touchdown, and the rest of his gains were important in keeping the Bucks bottled up in their own territory.

Bucks Put Up Dogged Fight

The Bucks weren't disgraced, by any means. They put up a dogged fight against by far the best team they've met this season.

There's still a hope for the Western Conference championship or a tie for it in the minds of the Buckeyes.

It's based on the hope that they can come back to win from Illinois and Michigan and that Iowa Northwestern or Minnesota will knock off the Badgers.

They figure that Wisconsin is likely to have an off day, just as Ohio State had today.

But the Badgers are good. As they played today they're good enough to win from anyone.

They dominated the ball game from start to finish except for that one Buckeye flas in the fourth quarter.

At this point, it appears Wisconsin is in the driver's seat and the Buckeyes will be lucky to finish the season with a tie for the Big Ten title.

There wasn't an alcohol ad on the front page, but there was this article covering the new federal liquor tax.

Liquor Tax

Long lines of customers jammed liquor stores in Columbus last night in an 11th-hour rush to stock up before the new federal tax of about 50 cents a quart goes into effect on Monday.

Many stores reported they were jam-packed early in the afternoon and in some cases four lines of purchasers formed at the cash windows.

[...]

Stores on Spring and Town street were crowded with customers from opening until closing. A check at 6 p.m. showed 100 customers in the Spring-at store and about 75 in the Town-at place.

Jacob Taylor, director of the State Department of Liquor Control, said the state had its largest stock of liquor on hand before the rush began last Monday.

"We had a $7,000,000 inventory because we were anticipating a mad rush as the new federal tax day drew near.
