2017 is the 75th anniversary of Ohio State's first national championship season. To honor the achievement, this series will post articles from the Columbus Citizen Journal on the day they ran in 1942.

In Today's Paper:

  • Don Hawk previews the Pre-Flight Seahawks and touches on Ohio State's "cripples".
  • Getchell's latest drawing.
  • Byrer turns his corner over to a reader's letter.
  • Bond & Lillard wants to be at your Thanksgiving feast.
Tough
Seahawks

The Ohio State football team, physically battered in the game with Michigan last Saturday, began preparations yesterday for the Iowa Seahawks without any heavy work at all. The squad didn't even don uniforms but spent the session indoors looking at pictures of the Wolverine contest, planning a defensive setup for the Seahawks, and reviewing the all-star personnel of Coach Bernie Bierman's team.

And it is an all-star personnel that will make up the Seahawk team that is scheduled to arrive in town Friday afternoon. Harlin "Whitey" Fraumann, Michigan's great end rates on the third team. Johnny Haman was an all-Big Ten center at Northwestern and was mentioned on many All-American teams but he is on the second team.

John Michelosen was one of Coach Jock Sutherand's prize quarterbacks in the day when Pittsburgh was supreme and moved to Brooklyn as a professional player under his old coach. He's a second-team man, too. George Paskvan as an All-American from Wisconsin at fullback and played with the Green Bay Packers, but he is only a second-stringer.

And so it goes all down the line. Men who received mention on All-Star teams, on All-Big Ten teams, or on regional all-star teams rate only on the second or third team at the pre-flight training school.

Expect Tough Game

Nauturally, Coach Paul Brown and his aides are expecting to meet a mighty foe when the sailors come to town. "These men are under orders," Brown told reporters yesterday, "and they play ball or else."

But that's not the only reason they'll want to beat us," he hastily added. "We're Big Ten champions now, most of these men are former professional players. It'll be a good pro team against a good college team. They'd like to win."

"If they beat us," Brown continued, "it'll be a feather in their hats since they'll be beating the top team in a tough conference and it'll be putting us in our place. We're on top now, they'll be out to knock us off."

"All season, they've played football that is just as good as they want it to be and just as good as it had to be," Brown concluded. "This week, those fellows will just naturally key themselves up---no one will have to do the job. We're just in for a tough afternoon."

And the evidence all pointed in the same direction as did the Brown statements. The Seahawks had lost only one game this year---that to Notre Dame---while winning from such powerful squads as Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Kansas and Indiana.

Costly Mistake

And even that one loss to Notre Dame had at least a partial explanation. "It seems," Brown related, "that there was a substitute tackle in the game for the Seahawks. He played in close to the guard and smashed into the line. The end was the type of man that liked to float out wide on defense and that left a big hole in the line. Notre Dame made a total of over 100 yards through that one position in that game."

Present plans for the Iowa Naval Cadets will find the squad traveling to Chicago for a workout Thursday afternoon, staying there over night, and coming on to Columbus by day coach Friday. There is no workout planned on Ohio soil so the team will not see Ohio Stadium until it takes the field at game time Saturday afternoon.

The Buckeyes reached its peak against the Wolverines last week when the Big Ten crown was at stake and there is considerable doubt that Coach Brown can get them to play the same kind of game as played then.

Despite the ferocity of play, none of the Bucks was seriously injured but all had bruises and stiff muscles yesterday. Paul Sarringhaus was hit the hardest. He was banged across the bridge of his nose and sported a swollen black eye. There was considerable fear among the Buckeye coaches that he would not be able to wear the contact lenses comfortably and that his play would suffer accordingly.

Cripples Still Out

There is only a very small ray of hope that any of the Buckeye cripples will be back in the game. Bill Sedor is still "out of the game, in all probability," according to the Buck trainer, Ernie Biggs, while Tommy James "might just show the improvement he made last week." Sedor, hard-charging rugged left end is still recovering from an injured knee he received in the Wisconsin game while James is suffering from the shoulder separation he received against Illinois.

The Seahawks will be heavier, more experienced, and rested up after their easy win over Nebrasksa in which the Cornhuskers were never able to advance the ball beyond their own 40-yard line.

Getchell
Byrer

Answering Bernard Gebhart, 442 Cedar Crest, Newark, O., and several other fans.

Paul Brown's Ohio State teams have won 14, tied one and lost two in the two seasons he has been Buckeye head coach.

Last year the Bucks won from Missouri 12-7, Southern Cal 33-0, Purdue 16-14, Pitt 21-14, Wisconsin 46-34, Illinois 12-7, tied Michigan 20-20 and lost to Northwestern 14-7.

This year the Bucks have won from Ft. Knox 59-0, Indiana 32-21, Southern California, 28-12, Purdue 26-0, Northwestern 20-6, Pitt 59-19, Illinois 44-20 and Michigan 21-7, and have lost only to Wisconsin 17-7.

For a young fellow less than two years out of the high school coaching ranks that's quiet a record.

Will Honor Bucks At Cleveland Dec. 2

Ohio State's championship football team and Coach Paul Brown and others on his staff will be honored at a "championship" dinner to be held at Hotel Carter on Dec. 2.

Not only the alumni, but the general public has been invited. Walter Von Schmidt, secretary-treasurer of the Ohio State Alumni Association, said today. As a result 1000 are expected this year.

Don Marshman, president of the Ohio State  Alumni, will be toastmaster, L.W. St. John, director of athletics at State, and Brown, will be principal speakers, although others may be invited. Motion pictures of the Michigan-Ohio, Iowa Seahawks-Ohio games will be shown.
