On a You Tube video I saw fairly recently it went over some of the early football rules.

There was a time when if one team got 4 touchdowns and the other team only got 4 field goals, the score would have been 20 - 8. The team with the field goals would have won. (Field goals were worth 5, touchdowns 2).

The "instant replay" used to only be a thing the TV commentators used. Then at some time "the replay booth" became a thing officials used ... with limits. What are the limits? They seem to have changed over the years.

I don't want this to degrade into arguing about past good or bad calls. To illustrate a point? OK.

I hope this generate insights into rule changes over the years to help those like me who are fans but ignorant of the details but want to understand more to enjoy the game more.
