Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 2/15 - Urban Meyer not in Columbus, so elite WR heads to Ann Arbor? (LGHL)

In a quiet Thursday along the recruiting front, we discovered that the Wolverines will be playing host to an elite Buckeye wide receiver target, a new offer was issued, and some rough news concerning Ohio State's pursuit of a 2014 signal caller.

Before addressing much of the (lack of) recruiting activity on Thursday, let's get to a Buckeye offer that was issued late Wednesday night. Petera Wilson, the 2014 6-3, 220-pound 3-star linebacker from White Station High School (Memphis, TN), was offered a scholarship by the Buckeyes. Despite his surprising 3-star rating, Wilson holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, and now, Ohio State:

College Football's Top 15 Impact JUCO Transfers for 2013 (athlon sports)

Most of the talk on college football’s national signing day centers around which true freshman can make the biggest impact for a program for that upcoming season. While true freshman often make big contributions, the impact junior college recruits can have on the BCS level shouldn't be overlooked. While recruiting a JUCO prospect is risky, they are solid stop-gap solutions and a short-term answer for a team that might be short on depth at a particular position.

Kansas State is usually one of the top programs for JUCO talent, so it’s no surprise the Wildcats signed six community college prospects. In-state rival Kansas topped Kansas State in JUCO signees this year, as Charlie Weis is bringing in a whopping 17 recruits. For a team that won just one game last year, loading up on JUCO prospects should bring hope the Jayhawks can make some progress in 2013. However, relying on junior college prospects also cuts down on the amount of freshmen a team can bring in, which is a concern for the long-term outlook of the program.

Identifying which junior college prospects will make the biggest impact is no easy task. Athlon has compiled a list of 15 impact junior college transfers, as well as a list of other players to watch in 2013.

Recruiting: Southfield's Lawrence Marshall weighing options after decommitment (freep)

This past weekend, class of 2014 defensive end prospect Lawrence Marshall of Southfield High School made a decision to attend and play for Ohio State. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect went to Columbus for a junior day and made a verbal commitment to OSU head coach Urban Meyer.

On Tuesday, Marshall traveled to East Lansing to take in the Michigan State-Michigan basketball game. He was able to spend time talking with head coach Mark Dantonio.

On Wednesday, Marshall made a trip to Ann Arbor to learn more about the Wolverines program.

Jalen Christian of Damascus won’t rush recruitment (washington post)

More than a year has passed since Damascus cornerback/wide receiver Jalen Christian garnered his first Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offer from South Carolina. Now a sophomore, he holds nine offers with plenty of time to add more given that he’s still two years away from making any decision official.

For a player whose first five offers came from South Carolina, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Ohio State and West Virginia before beginning his second year of high school, it was significant when local schools Virginia and Virginia Tech came through with offers in the fall. But he’s in no hurry to cut down his options at this point, calling the early attention “God’s gift to me.”

“I’m taking it day-by-day,” said Christian, an honorable mention All-Met selection on offense in the fall. “I’m enjoying this recruiting process because you only go through it once. I’m going to take it slow.”

Florida offers OL Sam Mustipher (gator country)

While Florida signed five offensive lineman in the Class of 2013, the Gators are still looking to build depth in the Class of 2014.

Olney (Md.) Good Counsel offensive guard Sam Mustipher is one of the latest prospects to receive an offer from Florida.

“Getting an offer from Florida is huge,” Mustipher said. “It was also my first SEC offer so that’s big too. It’s definitely one of the most exciting ones I have received. I look forward to staying in touch with the staff and getting down to Florida for a visit.

Action packed weekend ahead (rivals)

It will be a busy weekend here at BuckeyeGrove.com as we will be taking in three camps/combines in three days as well as tracking a couple of big name visitors that are making their way to Columbus to meet with the coaching staff. Below, we preview all of this weekend's activities.

Lonnie Johnson is expected to visit Ohio State over the weekend.

Buckeyes to host a couple of visitors

While things aren't expected to be as eventful as last weekend when the Buckeyes landed three verbal commitments in approximately an hour (though Lawrence Marshall has since de-committed), there will still be some visitors to keep an eye on this weekend.

Joliet (Ill.) Plainfield South linebacker Clifton Garrett will make yet another trip to Columbus this weekend before taking part in the Core6 Showcase down in Cincinnati on Sunday. The Buckeyes continue to be among the favorites to land the Rivals100 prospect, though a commitment this weekend would be a major surprise and is not expected.

Another player that has the Buckeyes high on his list is also expected in Gary (Ind.) West Side ATH Lonnie Johnson. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect is also going to be busy on the camp circuit this weekend and is expected to make a stop in Columbus while he is down in Buckeye State.

There has been some talk of Detroit (Mich.) Loyola defensive lineman Malik McDowell making an unofficial visit to Ohio State during the weekend as well but that is still very much up in the air and at this time we are not expecting McDowell to make it to Columbus.

Class of 2014 loaded with star cornerback recruits (sports illustrated)

Didn't get enough cornerback hype in last year's recruiting class? Don't worry. The tank has been refilled. There's more length, more speed and more instincts to be found in the 2014 cycle.

For coaches who missed out on highly touted defensive backs on Signing Day, there's likely a comparable one coming down the chute at any moment. Everyone deserves a second chance, after all.

A year ago, a group of cornerback prospects stole the national spotlight: Vernon Hargreaves III, Kendall Fuller, Jalen Ramsey and Tre'Davious White each maintained five-star ratings. Twelve months later, here we go ... again.

"Last year was a very special year at cornerback and might have had more depth, but this year is equally top-heavy and we already have four five-star kids, so I'd say this year is even more talented at the top in the early going," Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said. "It will be interesting to see which class emerges as the better one.
