Arizona Buckeyes

The wife and I are possibly looking to relocate to Arizona. Always wanted to go that direction and with the third and last off to college we are ready to go. Would like to hear from fellow Buckeyes in Arizona. What do you think of the place after living there a while? We know that a couple of years at a location can be great but over time that can change. I have family out there, a cousin, and they like it but we would like some other feedback. Also if you have any suggestions or thoughts on the best places in AZ to live would be great. On the flip side, where not to be in the state. How does the weather suit you? I know the temps get high but without humidity at times seems much better than the heat and humidity of south central Ohio. I've got RA so I need the dry weather. Have considered Vegas as well and am open to any really good place to live in that area of the country. We will be taking on condo life as we are both ready to be relieved of taking care of our country property. We are young to be retired, so definitely not ready for a "retirement" community. Just ready to enjoy life after much hard work. Also have to be able to watch Buckeye football, forgot the important part. Any insight would be appreciated. Sorry if this offends anyone, as I am certain it will. If not sight appropriate please remove. Thanks for any help/info from a fellow Buckeye fanatic of 45 years.

DISH NETWORK!!!!!!!!!!!

First they take off AMC, now with the season starting less than a week I find out they might be dropping the Big 10 Network! I lived in NW Ohio my whole life but moved to AZ the last few years, half the games are usually on espn or espn2 and the other half on the Big 10 Network... I know a good majority of you live in Ohio and get every game but there are alot of us that depend on the B1G Network to watch our beloved Buckeyes! We need your help, call and complain, send an email, ANYTHING! Its not only important to me but alot of Buckeye fans scattered across the country, its important for national exposure of the conference and the team, please help! I cant get out of the contract and I cant watch the game on Saturday!

reactions to espn's all access

I have been looking for info on reactions to the espn all-access series following tOSU. I havent found much just saw a ($)247 article about raekwon mcmillan where he states "Something special is going to happen at Ohio State real soon." I thought the series showed a very good look behind the scenes on how  meyer runs things and the level of intensity that he brings. It really showed how important coach mick is to the developement of players both physically and pshychologicly. He is so intense and positive a real in your face guy that im sure alot of recruits would love to train under. This series was obviously good for national exposure but what are HS players saying. Has anyone seen anything or has any 11w staff spoke to any recruits about this or if they plan to. Look forward to seeing what people thought of our beloved buckeyes. Just tryin to get my football fix to help make it til this weekend. Go Bucks!

When will #10 be retired?

Just wondering if anyone knew when or  if we were going to hang up #10 for Troy Smith. I think it's weird to have guys on both sides of the ball wearing a Heisman winners Jersey number. Most other teams don't do that, so I was curious to see if anyone knew anything about this.  I know no one is wearing #15 at Florida, USC has Bush and Leinart's #'s retired. I think Alabama has a guy wearing Ingram's #22, which is weird for a school with only one winner.  I hope we will see Troy's number retired soon.      blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blaah blah blah blah blaah blah balh blh blah blah.

Help for the season opener b/c I will be out of Ohio. Blasphemy, I know.

So, for the season opener, I will be in Boca Raton, FL. If I was going to Idaho, I wouldn't have much hope of catching the game, especially with the opponent. Since it is Florida:

Anyone here with familiarity of the area and knowledge of where I can go in either Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach to catch the game? Any groups of Buckeyes there who get together for games that you know of and can be contacted? With the volume of Buckeye fans living all over FL, there has to be a place to go. I just don't know of it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Eleven Warriors App?

Hi I was wondering if the staff had any plans on developing an android/apple app for this awesome site? I think it would be a wonderful idea and a nice way to earn some extra cash by offering a add free version for a small price. With the popularity of mobile browsing and tablet browsing I think this would be a wonderful way for many of us to stay in the loop on the go. Im sure many of us wouldnt mind forking over a couple bucks for a ad free app to keep us up to date on the best damn team in the land.

Top 25 Breakdown

College football needs an offseason like Weird Al needs a weirdness coach, like cycling needs a doping scandal, like television needs feminine hygiene and E.D. ads, like this guy needs some free time.  You get it right?  If you don’t than I am certain that Black Shoe Diaries will welcome you with open arms.  Recruiting news, Spring games, preseason polls (oops) and scandals just don’t quite do it for me.
Of course they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder.  Well I beg to differ when it comes to College Football.  Absence simply makes me refill my xanax more often.  College football needs games to keep its still loyal throngs foaming at the mouth, and this guy’s mouth seems like it hasn’t foamed in ages.
Perhaps it’s not that the offseason is so long but rather that the past couple of them have been so rocky.  My favorite sport really needs a little less tumult and a little more double rainbows.  Alas, have no fear sports fans for the season is now breathing down our necks, the BCS is dead, and Penn State has names on their jerseys so we’ve got that going for us.  Let’s get this party started baby!  Here are 25 teams that I expect to be better than 5-7.

#1 USC –If Lane Kiffin were an outsider he wouldn’t vote USC #1, but since he isn’t he did and so will I.  Barkley, Woods, Lee and now Silas Redd.  YIKES for scoreboard operators and PAC 12 defenders.  The front seven and depth are a concern but that offense is enough to get the top spot.

#2 Alabama –The NFL’s 33rd franchise comes in to 2012 with crystal balls becoming a regular Alabama Wal-Mart tourist attraction.  The offense will have to do it without Trent Richardson and A.J. McCarron will have to be more productive, but the defense will be solid as usual and the talent level is elite.

#3 Florida State –FSU will have the advantage of being 2-0 before playing a real football game and that should leave them healthy and rested for their other 11 or 12 games.  It’s about time for FSU to once again treat the ACC like a rented mule.

#4 Oklahoma –OOOKla-homa where the wind comes sweepin’down the plains and Landry Jones better throw fewer INT’s.  The Sooners will be solid on offense even without Ryan Broyles, but is the defense good enough to keep the schooner rolling?  Mike Stoops is back in Norman to see if he can make the defense elite again.

#5 LSU - Coach Les Miles is certain that based on the elimination of 2 of the best outside defenders in the contiguous states of the USA that an unprecedented level of desperation has been cast upon the Bengals of Southern Louisiana from which they might never recover.  He has ascertained that a reassessment of the teams goals will be necessary prior to proceeding with the 2012 pigskin campaign.  If you don’t catch my drift go here.

#6 Oregon - Rumors are swirling that the Ducks are the next team with an NCAA target on their back, but that won’t keep them from challenging for the Pac 12 title.  Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas will pile up insane yardage and the Ducks will outrun their opponents yet again this season.  Can the defense stop USC in November?  I don’t think so, but this team is likely BCS bowl bound.

#7 Georgia - The Bulldogs have as good a chance of running the table as anyone in the country this season.  Largely because of a favorable schedule that again sees UGA missing Arkansas, LSU and Alabama.  Aaron Murray is very good, but there is no RB experience due to offseason issues.  The defense will be tough and UGA should have a 10 win season.

#8 Michigan - UM has seemingly moved back into the role of perennial contender that they are so familiar with.  Denard Robinson is still a work in progress as a passer, but he can run like the wind.  Fitz Toussaint is a good compliment in the backfield and Greg Mattison has the defense back in shape.  No FSU-style warmups for the Wolverines though as they travel to Jerry World for a Week 1 tilt with Bama.

#9 Texas - I am bullish on Texas because of their defense and their running game, but QB play is a pretty huge unknown.  A brutal 3 game stretch @ Okie State, West Virginia and vs. Oklahoma will determine if this team is a BCS bowl contender or just another decent Texas team.  Freshman Johnathan Gray scored 205 TD’s in high school.......just sayin’

#10 Arkansas - If John L. Smith can keep his coaches from screwin' it up this Arkansas team can be special.  Tyler Wilson and Knile Davis man the best offense in the SEC West, and momentum will be created by 2 scrimmages before the Week 3 Bama game.

#11 Wisconsin - Bret Bielema takes offense to the claim that UW doesn’t develop its own QB’s, but who needs to when you can exploit NCAA loopholes?  Montee (pronounced Mon-tay this season) Ball is a straight up bad ass and the Badgers are a quality team.  Jared Abbrederis will be an All American in some capacity.

#12 West Virginia - West Virginia just extended Dana Holgorsen’s contract and it couldn’t have come at a better time for him.  Welcome to round robin Big XII play ‘Eers.  6 week stretch includes @ Texas, @ Texas Tech (well it’s on the road), Kansas State, TCU, @ Okie State and hosting Oklahoma.  Jeepers.  Geno Smith will need to be at his best for WVU to make it through the Big XII without 3 losses.

#13 South Carolina - USCe has become a major thorn in the sides of Florida and Georgia in the SEC East.  Connor Shaw provides stability at QB that has been lacking forever, and this team has some Cocks of the Walk.  Lattimore and Clowney might be the most talented 2 player off-def combo in the country.  Spurrier knows how to win CFB game pretty well.

#14 Ohio State - Yes I am a Buckeye fan, yes I have a tattoo, yes I paid for it, yes I do this anytime I hear mean things about Jim Tressel, and yes I recently had a nightmare that OSU lost an unprecedented opening day double-header to 2 MAC teams by a combined score of 53-13.  That being said this team is improved LB play away from being dominant on defense, the coaching staff is a major upgrade and 10 wins is not complete crazy talk.

#15 Florida - See #14.  Defense could be exceptional.  Offense should be better with fresh ideas.  Coach BOOM is intense and will have the Gators ready to play.  Big games are spread out nicely with easier games between UT (rivalry), LSU and @ FSU.  Tough 3 game stretch with South Carolina, vs UGA and Missouri will determine quality of this season.

#16 Stanford - Smart guys are good enough to keep the momentum rolling.  Stepfan Taylor is very good and will carry the offense early.  3rd best team in the Pac 12 is not a bad spot.  The defense is good enough to keep them in most games outside of USC and Oregon.  Another nice year for the tree.

#17 TCU - The Horned Frogs can’t feel as if they have reached a destination by moving into the Big 12 or they will be in for a long season.  Skill players will be very good on offense, but the OLine is inexperienced.  If the defense returns to pre-2011 form the Frogs could finish in the top 15 for the 5th straight season.

#18 Nebraska - Can Taylor Martinez become a poor man’s Denard Robinson?  If so, he and Rex Burkhead will be tough to slow down.  Crick and David are tough losses on the defensive side of the ball, but this isn’t a Callahan coached team so the defense will be fine.

#19 Clemson - Dabo Swinney has created a buzz around the Tigers program and the Tajh Boyd/Sammy Watkins duo is legit.  The defense obviously needs to improve after a tough season of giving up way too many points, but Clemson has contender-type of talent.

#20 I wanna put a mid major here but Virginia Tech - Logan Taylor is a solid QB, the defense is almost always solid for VT and the ACC Coastal is the ACC Coastal.  Beamer ball is a household term (for college football nuts at least) for a reason and the Hokies will be good despite losing David Wilson and most of their starting OLine.

#21 Michigan State - Coach Dantonio has elevated the Spartans to a high level.  The defense will be nasty and the running game should be good.  Kirk Cousins was a special leader/player and he will be missed more than most anticipate in my humble opinion.

#22 Boise State - Big East huh?  Well that’s.........something.  Poor Boise State just can’t find a home that is worthy of their football excellence.  The offense will be in rebuild mode, but the program is at a level to sustain quality, especially with that schedule.  Sparty better be ready for the Broncos in Week 1.

#23 Kansas State - Collin Klein is media savvy, motivated, and perhaps a wizard.  Coach Snyder will only show us what he wants us to see and EcoKat will save the world one aluminum can at a time.  No way the Wildcats win as many close games this season, but a bowl trip is in order.

#24 Oklahoma State - True freshman quarterbacks take lumps, and the Big 12 is a tough place to learn your craft.  Coach Gundy has loads of talent in Stillwater these days, but they just lost too much on offense to sustain 10-win levels of success.  Joseph Randle and Jeremy Smith might lead the country as a rushing tandem, but the defense isn’t good enough to overcome the growing pains on offense.

#25 Arkansas State/Ohio - Sure I could slide Washington, Missouri, Notre Dame or some other “big boy” in here, but where’s the fun in that?  Go Bobcats and Red Wolves.  Kudos to A-State for scheduling Oregon and Nebraska, and OU has a chance to start the year by beating Penn State.  Here’s to the little guys in big time college football.

Cincinnati Buckeyes

Dearest Buckeyes that live in Cincinnati:

For the last few years I have been relegated to watching our Beloved Bullets either at home, or at a bar with 3,000 tvs, only 2 of which have the Buckeyes on, and are frequented by only the smattering of the Faithful.

Does anyone have suggestions for a bar or gathering place that is devoted to the Bucks and will be full of the Scarlet and Gray Crazed? I live in the Norwood area, and would be willing to travel within the 275 loop (though I don't think I'd be welcome on the West side...I wasn't born and raised there...).

Thanks for your suggestions! If we meet up, maybe the first round will be on me!

3 OSU/M*chigan Must-See Matchups in 2012

With exactly 100 days left until The Game, and with my excitement for this OSU season currently at a Spinal Tap 11, I thought that I'd throw out three of my favorite matchups to watch for this year between these hated rivals.

(Note: While I realize that Brady Hoke vs. China Dynasty's buffet on West Lane is a much-anticipated battle, it will not make this list.)

Jake Stoneburner (WR/TE) vs. JT Floyd (CB)

When he’s not making headlines for peeing on stuff, Jake Stoneburner is a dynamic player with a tremendous work ethic, and has the potential to earn his way back into a crucial role on the OSU offense.  The coaching staff recently reported that Stoneburner may still line up occasionally as a tight end, but will spend the majority of time as a wide receiver.  Stoneburner was named to the John Mackey Award watch list, given to the best tight end in the country, but will aim to move his athleticism out wide for his senior season.

JT Floyd, like many current Wolverine players, came in during the dark days of Rich Rod in 2008 (or ‘bye weeks’ as OSU fans refer to them).  Despite not being heavily recruited by many other programs, the South Carolina native has decent speed, has improved his coverage skills with each passing year, and should continue to improve again under the current coaching regime.  Floyd led the Wolverines with 2 interceptions and 8 pass breakups, had 48 tackles, and a forced fumble.

What makes this matchup intriguing to me is that UM does not have a tremendous amount of size in their defensive backfield, so adding another tight end to the field and moving Stoneburner to wide receiver could help OSU exploit that weakness.  Measuring in at 6’, Floyd is the tallest starting DB for the Wolverines, while Stoneburner is currently listed at 6’5”.

Aside from the height advantage, Stoneburner will be much more of a load to bring down than previous wide receivers that Floyd will have faced, since he will be giving up about 60 pounds to the former tight end.

If TSUN decides to try and cover Stoneburner with anyone other than a corner (especially a linebacker), this will create some horrific matchups in speed, as he can still run even with most other wide receivers.

The final component in this matchup is the fact that both players are heading into their senior seasons, and both will have similar, but different goals in The Game.  Floyd will be hoping to keep UM's chances for a B1G title alive and looking for a potential BCS bowl game to cap his year, and Stoneburner will hope to play spoiler, send the Wolverines home with an 'L', and boost his NFL draft stock simultaneously.

Key matchup stat – Jake Stoneburner - 6’5”, 245 lbs VS. JT Floyd - 6’, 183 lbs

Johnathan Hankins (DT) vs. Kyle Kalis (LG)

We often read about recruiting battles between OSU and UM, and they typically refer to a HS player from Ohio who has offers from both schools.  However, in the case of Johnathan Hankins, a.k.a. Big Hank, the Buckeyes were able to go up north and steal a defensive line prospect from Dearborn Heights, MI.  At 6'3" and 317 lbs, "Big Hank" is a fairly easy nickname to come by, but it's his freakish quickness and agility, not just his size, that make him difficult for the offensive linemen to block.  Hankins has worked over the past two years to drop weight and improve on his quickness and stamina, and is already listed as a preseason All-American selection and is on the Bednarik Award watch list.  In fact, as of May, Mel Kiper's 2013 NFL Mock Draft has Hankins listed as the highest ranked B1G player and the number 11 overall draft pick.  Regardless of hypothetical draft scenarios, one guaranteed fact is that with the boost in defensive line talent and depth at OSU this year, Hankins will be a handful for any opposing lineman to match up with, especially a freshman....which leads me to...

Kyle Kalis, the man, the myth, the freshman.  Kalis, an Ohio native, made big waves last year with his decommitment from OSU and subsequent commitment to TSUN, and continued to keep the waters choppy with comments about/to OSU fans.  In his defense, he had made his commitment to Jim Tressel, so the impending sanctions and "resignation" of the coach were certainly reason enough to leave.  However, when he received Twitter comments in poor taste and threats from the 1% of OSU fans that sit in their basement yelling at their mom to bring them meatloaf, he decided to lash out.  The comment that drew the most criticism (read: "laughter") from Buckeye fans was, "November 24th is going to be ugly.  There will be blood on the field and it won't be mine."  As for Kalis' ability on the field, well, it's yet to be seen.  He was more than impressive against high school opponents in northern Ohio, but could get a chance to walk the walk very soon against NCAA competition.

So what makes this matchup one of my favorites?  Ohio boy turned Wolverine vs. M*chigan boy turned Buckeye, upperclassman vs. true freshman, preseason All-American vs. 5* recruit, etc...

However, it should be noted that Kyle Kalis will be battling to earn a spot on the field.  He is currently as low as 3rd and as high as 1.b on the depth chart for the left guard position, so he has his work cut out for him in August.  If he is unable to earn a starting job, then we'll switch this matchup to Kalis vs. OSU fans on Twitter, and assume that he will have to spill the blood of MAC opponents in his limited playing time.

Key matchup stat – Johnathan Hankins has roughly 6 quarts of blood...Good luck, Kyle

Braxton Miller (QB) vs. Denard Robinson (QB)

Hopefully this one doesn't come as much of a shock to you...and yes, it's technically cheating since they don't line up against each other on the field, but this is my blog entry, so let it go.

OSU's mobile quarterback had some magnificent highlights in 2011, but also struggled within an offense that kept his hands tied for most of the year.  Look no further than the Illinois game in which Braxton managed to complete just one pass on four attempts and somehow sneak out a victory, thanks simply to more talent up front than their opponents.  Now, enter new head coach, Urban Meyer and new offensive coordinator, Tom Herman, and we're looking at a whole new world of possibilities for Miller.  Herman has a history of getting the most offensive production imagineable out of his players, and Meyer's proven track record of winning with a dynamic spread offense speaks for itself.  Combine that with the talent that we know is there with Braxton Miller, aside from just his scrambling abilities, and we hopefully will see an immediate difference in production from 2011 to 2012.

Although he still hasn't learned how to tie his shoes, Denard Robinson has proven that he has an uncanny ability to find a small gap in a defense and turn it into a huge play.  His speed is unquestioned, except for when he claims that he's faster than Usain Bolt but that's another story, and his agility and elusiveness make him a defensive coordinator's nightmare.  There are flaws with his game, namely the passing part of it, but his constant threat of bringing the ball down and running helps keep defenses on their heels and gives him more time/opportunity to throw.

While the other matchups could certainly play a huge role in determining the winner in 2012, nothing competes with the Braxton vs. Denard battle.  The 2011 battle had both teams scoring at least a touchdown more than their average point total, and Miller and Robinson destroying their rival's defense with their feet and arms.

Furthermore, Braxton wants to prove that he is the guy that Urban Meyer dreams of coaching at the QB position, and Robinson wants to put UM on his shoulders for his senior campaign and go out on top.  This QB matchup in The Game should be one that will be remembered for years to come.

Key matchup stat – 337 total yards for Denard Robinson vs. 336 total yards for Braxton Miller in 2011

What other matchups are you looking forward to in The Game?
