The offseason heat only continues to rise as the college football landscape embraces July.
The Eleven Dubcast skipped last week to allow Johnny a comfortable transition into his family’s new home, and in our absence, tensions between the sport’s two biggest conferences kept growing. Two episodes ago, we spoke about how the SEC seems to have a bit of insecurity bubbling to its surface relative to concerns about the Big Ten cementing itself as the dominant authority in college football after back-to-back national titles.
While a lot of that was reading the tea leaves on our part, players and coaches in both camps alike have since made some spicy comments on the situation worth examining. Even figures from the more minor schools on the SEC totem pole such as Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia feel compelled to make their criticisms of the Big Ten known.
But perhaps more interestingly, Bret Bielema has effectively declared the SEC appears outright afraid of direct confrontation with the Big Ten during the regular season. Big Bert also asserts that the coaches down south don’t want to adopt the same number of conference games that the Big Ten adheres to, which would refute comments made by LSU’s Brian Kelly earlier this offseason on both subjects.
In Bielema’s defense, the south historically doesn’t quite welcome structural changes that its Yankee counterparts have already embraced.
Additionally, the Dubcast discussion also covers:
- A civil suit against former Michigan coordinator Matt Weiss claims that Jim Harbaugh had knowledge of the former’s alleged criminal misconduct and let him continue coaching anyway. But as Connor Stalions would attest, when has Harbaugh ever paid attention to anything his staff does?
- Speaking of Stalions, does that strong recruiting week Michigan just had inspire any concern that they may have quiet confidence in a soft forthcoming punishment from the NCAA?
- Ask Us Anything — writers to dubcast@elevenwarriors.com this week inquired about many topics, such as whether we’d rather see a full season of only noon or only night games for Ohio State.
- EA Sports CFB 26 made Jeremiah Smith a 99 overall last week before knocking him back down a rating earlier today. The game also listed Ohio Stadium as the third toughest place to play in America. But can Buckeye fans really boast about that with a straight face?
- Caitlin Clark and Jacy Sheldon are continuing the beef from their Iowa/OSU days now in the WNBA. Does the league need to step in to protect its superstar, or are Sheldon and her peers justified given Clark’s flopping that would make even LeBron blush?
- Kirk Barton. Why?
