Thanks to clutch plays by its defense, Ohio State overcame a slow offensive start to earn a road win in its Big Ten opener.

Led by a dominant performance from defensive linemen Caden Curry and Kayden McDonald, who combined for 18 tackles, eight tackles for loss and five sacks, Ohio State earned a 24-6 win over Washington, handing the Huskies their first loss at Husky Stadium since 2021.

Ohio State held Washington without a touchdown despite three trips to the red zone, including two that reached OSU’s 3-yard line or further. A fourth-down sack by McDonald in the fourth quarter effectively sealed the Buckeyes’ victory, after which Ohio State put the game away with an eight-play, 44-yard drive that culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Julian Sayin to CJ Donaldson.

Ohio State trailed for the first time all season as it needed nearly 29 minutes to score its first points of the game. Once Jeremiah Smith got the Buckeyes on the board with an 18-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 1:08 left to play before halftime, however, Ohio State held the lead for the rest of the game.

Key Moments

Q2, 1:08: Smith turns 3rd-and-11 into game’s first touchdown

Having gone nearly 29 minutes without points, Ohio State was at serious risk of having to settle for a field goal on its final drive of the half as its faced 3rd-and-11 at the 18-yard line. But Ohio State’s superstar receiver sped through the Washington defense to turn a short pass into a touchdown, giving the Buckeyes their first points and a 7-3 lead before halftime.

Q3, 3:49: Ohio State’s defense makes third red zone stop of game

After holding Washington to two field goal attempts in the red zone in the first quarter – one of which ended without points as the Huskies unsuccessfully attempted a fake – the Buckeyes did it again on Washington’s opening drive of the second half. Washington drove the ball to Ohio State’s 3-yard line, but McDonald came up with a 7-yard sack on 3rd-and-goal to force Washington to settle for a 28-yard Grady Gross FG, preserving an eight-point lead for the Buckeyes.

Q4, 8:44: McDonald makes fourth-down sack

McDonald came up big yet again on Washington’s next possession, sacking Demond Williams Jr. on 4th-and-2 to give the Buckeyes the ball back on Washington’s side of the field and preserve a two-score lead for Ohio State with under nine minutes to play.

Q4, 4:56: Sayin, Donaldson seal win with fourth-down touchdown

Facing 4th-and-1 at Washington’s 4-yard line, Ohio State played to win rather than settling for a field goal that would keep its lead at only two scores. Donaldson got wide open on a route out of the backfield, and Sayin found him for a 4-yard touchdown to give the Buckeyes an 18-point lead with less than five minutes to play.
