Calvin and Hobbes

On this date 35 years ago, Bill Watterson brought his unique style, wit and humor to the comic pages. With Calvin and Hobbes, Watterson transported us back to the art form that graced the daily comics of years gone by. He also fought against the commercialism that was being pursued by other authors and publishers.

I read Calvin and Hobbes everyday during my formative years. Watterson's work was a staple of my morning routine...eat breakfast, read Calvin and Hobbes and get ready for school. I will always remember the anticipation and sadness I had leading up to the last strip that ran on December 31, 1995.

In 2001, Ohio State's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum held an exhibition of Watterson's Sunday strips. In 2014, his work was again on display at Ohio State. This time around, he participated in an interview on campus.

If you did not know, Watterson grew up in northern Ohio and attended school at Kenyon College in Gambier. It is believed that he still lives in the Cleveland area with his wife. Mr. Watterson is a private man and rarely grants interviews.

Cheers, to the great places Mr. Watterson took all of us with the magical journeys of a young boy and his stuffed tiger.
