Jordan Hall Redshirt

It is being reported on Twitter that the staff has checked into getting a medical redshirt for Hall... If they redshirt him, what does this do in terms of Jalin Marshall and Tavion Jacobs?  Does this just increase depth and help, or does this put Jacobs on the path to being redshirted as a freshman to learn the system and gain weight?  I see this as a positive no matter what, I just wanted to know what everyone else thinks.

If Hall redshirts, I think this gives guys like Eze and Jalin more time to learn the system.  At the very least, they will need to be available as a backup to Hall because they'll only be one play away from seeing the field.

I'm all for it in terms of depth and experience. But if Meyer beleives one of the incoming guys is a better fit for the offense as a playmaker over Hall, I don't think he'll hesitate to put Marshall or Jacobs or whoever in.

IMO there is no downside here.   Hall is dynamic and very valuable to the team.  Having him back and healthy to lead the team will pay huge dividends.   On the field and off.

I believe this is something that can only be a good thing. Jordan hasnt really played all season due to injuries. Hall is a type of playmaker that another year in Urban's offense, & he could explode . Not only does it give him another year in the offense, but gives the whole offense another year after a year of experience to really take this offense to the next level which will also help Jordan next season.

Hyde seems to have the HB position on lockdown right now & I believe he is doing a fine job, so everything is fine at HB as I see Hall getting alot of PT at the slot receiver position next year.

Only way I could see this being a bad thing is that it might take away a scholarship (Hall graduating)  that could of went to the 2013 class which will prolly now go to the 2014 class (good thing).

I dont mind the loss of that schollie because I look at it like this, even if it takes 1 scholarship away that we could of used to bring in a guy like Elder, Timmons, or another playmaker or w/e for 2013, Hall is a proven player. Hall being a proven playmaker, Id take him over the gambling chances of another recruit.

1 year of success for Hall > 1 scholarship player for 2013 that is unproven.

I say this because Hall will help bring success to this offense & like I said, he is a proven playmaker, he can make plays & every week we know that Hall will help us win games on the offensive side of the ball. Now a recruit (could be any position) highly recruited or only a 3/2 star player isnt a proven player. Just because its a 5* recruit dosnt mean he will bring success to this team.

Exactly, people get too caught up in freshmen getting playing time because of the recruiting craze.  You want as much depth as possible and if the freshmen are good enough they will get some snaps on the field.  But ideally you would have reliable juniors and seniors dominating the playing time and the freshmen contributing in whatever way they can until they learn the system.

Like I said in another thread I'm looking forward to some Earth, wind & fire from Hyde, Miller and Hall next year.  We are too much of an up the middle team this year due to the passing game being behind the running game and the lack of a guy like Hall to attack the edge on perimeter running plays (other than Philly who is still primarily our underneath receiver).

I agree @TennBuckeye19.

Meyer will use that depth and versatility to his advantage.  If you've got guys like Elliott, Hall, Marshall, etc. all on the field at the same time, there is the possibility that any could find themself in the backfield getting a carry, taking a pitch, running a route, or whatever else Meyer and Herman come up with.

Or, if the freshmen aren't quite ready to be thrust into major playing time right away, Hall can be more or less their mentor, teaching them the ropes and the in's/out's of the offense.

@Bucknut8:

Another year is in the offense is such an overlooked thing.  The guys we have now are operating out of a somewhat limited playbook.  It is a simple but highly effective gameplan in some of the games but there's lots of wrinkles that could be added to exploit these crazy 8 men in the box + blitz a corner run centric defenses we see every week.

Also I'm not sure we really lose that scholarship for recruiting purposes since we have had so much attrition and may have some more that our scholarship numbers are already well under the NCAA sanction requirement (I believe Urban said we are at 76 scholarships at the moment).  With the other seniors graduating we probably have room for a full 24-25 recruits.  Anyone done the math on this?

I always find it interesting when you redshirt a guy at this point in his career.  I imagine he was on schedule to graduate at some point this year.  Do they approach him like, hey budddddy, wanna go to grad school?  And if so, what would you like to take?  By the way, don't worry about taking the GRE.  Or is there another path to keeping them at school?

Do you guys honestly want Jordan Hall back next year?  My buddy, who is a huge OSU fan, is pretty meh about it, as he anticipates Elliott and Marshall and the incumbants to be a better, as a whole, than what Hall will offer.

Hail,

A lot of fans overvalue incoming recruits.  I would love for all the top recruits to come in and be good enough to beat out guys like Jordan Hall but it often doesn't work that way unless they are Beanie Wells, Ted Ginn or Maurice Clarett types of talents.  And in that case I would still prefer to have Hall as a spell back over the other young guns for depth purposes.  There's not much downside.

UABuckeye's picture

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! We have limited numbers. I respect everyone's opinion but this is a really bad idea. Not only is he keeping a scholarship when we already have limited numbers, but who's to say he won't get hurt again. Jordan has been pretty injury prone throughout his career at OSU. We have plenty of depth at RB without him.

Hail, I don't mind getting Hall back because he can also help the frosh learn the system.  Beyond that, when he's healthy, he can make people miss and be a valuable part of this Offense.

Set your avi

There's also nothing wrong with RB by committee.  Urban obviously thinks for good reason that Hyde is significantly better and more reliable than Smith and Dunn so Hyde is getting 95% of the plays with Smith getting a handful of plays per game lately.  But if multiple guys are worthy then multiple guys will touch the ball.  That backfield will also become far less crowded in 2013 after Hyde and Hall are both gone.  At that point whoever wins the competition will become the featured guy(s).  You don't just come in and get the ball you have to prove you can do something with it first (and not fumble etc).

4Dorr, last I heard, Dunn still needs to learn the Offense.  Last time I recall him playing, he made a mistake and went to the wrong side of Braxton.  Actually, I believe it was him who stood directly behind Braxton one time so Braxton couldn't really move, and I believe that ended up being a sack or TFL.

The kid is a Buckeye and if he needs to get a medical redshirt then get him one.  I look at it like one big family.  How can you turn your back on one of your own family members just because he got injured?  If you think we shouldn't do it just because you want an extra recruit then you haven't coached or played on a true team.  You don't turn your back on your brothers and it's not as if he hasn't earned his right to be there!

Earle's picture

I think Hall alongside Braxton and Hyde with a year in the system under their belts will be very scary for defenses.  Keep in mind that we have not seen a healthy Hall in this offense and that Brax is still figuring out the zone read.

The only downside I see is possibly taking carries away from Rod Smith, and if he doesn't learn to hang onto the football, that won't matter.

For Jordan I think it is a positive.  Weapons, weapons, weapons.  The kid will really know the offense like the back of his hand with another Spring and pre-season under his belt.  Always good to have guys with experience and game.

That being said I caution people who are acting like this is a foregone conclusion.  Until I hear Hall say that this is something that he wants to do I will consider these discussion as pure speculation.

I can only trust the staff on this one. Hey must really think Hall is special to ry and keep him o another year. Obviously this year was a bust for him with everything that happened medically and for it to be your senior season sucks. It does push one scholarship back a year, which could be bad with limited numbers, but we have to remember that it helps us now more.

one thing we can all agree on: the OSU rushing attack is going to be NASTY for the next few years. also having speedy guys that can get to the edge will give us a really balanced rushing attack with the power backs hyde and dunn. oh, and let's not forget our best rusher (braxton :D)...we all know what he's capable of!

so excited to see how this offense develops this season and the next couple. this team could have the best rushing offense in the country next year. and as braxton is becoming more accurate with his passing, look out.

What I like about it is, we don't have to depend on freshman to make big plays.  Hall may not be as electric as Marshall and Elliot will be, but he's nice option to have on the field.  That way the youngsters can actually learn and ease into a position of importance.  I was never convinced that this team would win a title depending on 2 true freshman, as well as freshman receivers, to make significant contributions on offense.  This takes away some of that pressure.

@BUCKSNUT13...  If Hall comes back and takes a scholly away, I definitely don't see Timmons in this class.  You're most likely looking at Gibson and probably Stevens finishing out the skill positions in this class.  I think the rest will go to an OL and defense.

RB- Hall/Hyde

Backup: Smith/Dunn

WR:  Smith

Backup: Thomas

WR: Brown

Backup: Reed

WR: Spencer

Backup: Fields

While I'm not saying Zeke and Jalin won't ever get in, but I just do not see them getting any significant time.  Jacobs I think will get a redshirt as will Timmons/Elder if we end up getting either of them.

It at worst moves a 2013 scholarship to 2014, given our sanction limits.  I don't see the big deal with that if it is even the case that we are limited given our low numbers due to attrition.

otrain2416's picture
otrain2416 on 25 Oct 2012 - 4:57pm #

I'm not a big fan of this move. I feel like were really limited with numbers, our backfield is getting real crowded real fast, and I hope it doesn't cause one of our young guys to transfer that could have been a big contributer for 2-3 years. I've never been very impressed with Hall carrying the ball. I think he's had one game over 100 yards and it was vs UAB. I like his lateral quickness, but he has no breakaway speed which pretty much eliminates him from being the "home run threat" Urbans been looking for. He also seems to go down pretty easy when guys hit him verses guys like Hyde and Smith who can run over people. I know he's not a power back like those two but reguardless you have to be able to break a tackle here and there which I haven't seen much out of him. If the staff thinks its the right move I'll trust them they get paid the big bucks to make these decisions. Go Bucks!

@BUCKSNUT13... We already have 2 slot guys in Marshall and Jacobs... We really don't need another guy like that in this class.  I'm sure the staff is looking for a couple of guys who can play on the outside.  Stevens is a 6-3 guy who can go up and get it.  I see Gibson in this class because he has been a lock from the beginning.

By my count we have 21 seniors leaving if you exclude Hall and possibly early entry from Hankins which would make 22 exiting plus any other transfers or attrition that could still happen (Jamie Wood medical hardship rumors come to mind).  Since we already have a cushion due to attrition of 6 (if Urban's 76 scholarships count is correct compared to NCAA limit of 82 for us), that means we have 27 or 28 scholarships free for next year via recruiting or incoming transfers (JuCo) without Jordan Hall leaving.  Numbers don't seem to be an issue scholarship-wise.  Depth on the other hand, which Hall would help provide is an issue for this team.  I don't want to rely on freshmen to compete for a national title.  If one steps up like Clarett then play them, but this is not a bad thing for OSU if Hall stays another year.  And if it's because you think Hall isn't a superstar RB then sure he isn't but he will likely be one of our best next year due to other guys just not being developed enough (unless Dunn or Smith beats him out then we can play a big committee of guys, fine by me).

Maestro's picture
Maestro on 25 Oct 2012 - 5:25pm #

I think in general people expect too much out of true freshman.  Jalin Marshall will be a good player, but I doubt he plays much next season.  Same for Zeke.  The learning curve is too steep and the physical development needed is too great for more than a rare freshman to play much at a school like OSU.  See Dunn this season.  Once the conference season started he was relegated to special teams.  Expect much of the same from the 2013 class.

Getting Hall to come back provides leadership, depth, experience and a player that can return punts or kick off, play RB, play slot receiver, play special teams.  He is a valuable asset if he chooses to return.

SEC- i think that marshall becomes the harvin player and rushes the ball a lot. U can play shelton gibson and taivon jacobs on the outside because they are lanky and have straight line speed. Elder and timmons would be better on the inside cause they are shifty and super quick. I would take speed and quickness over height any day of the week

I continue to be surprised by the number of posters who hear the name Jordan Hall and think "Meh".  Folks, as good as Carlos Hyde has looked, the fact is that Jordan Hall beat him out as the starting tailback and showed every sign, before getting injured at MSU, of getting the bulk of the running back carries.

Granted, he doesn't have elite speed, but some of the greatest running backs of all time didn't either.  He does have a very good combination of elusiveness, balance and power, and can catch the ball really well also.  And don't underestimate the significance of understanding the offense and simply not making mistakes.  It's quite clear that the coaches trust him completely in this offense.

Of course, the problem is he's been injured for most of this year, and truth be told, I think he was slowed significantly for most of the second half of last year also. (Hence the opinion that he's too slow when in reality he's likely been hobbled but still able to positively contribute with his other skills).  He showed some really good pop early in the year last season (against Miami and Colorado) that we simply didn't see the rest of the season.

So is getting Jordan Hall back for a renewed, hopefully 100% healthy, second Senior season worth the scholarship?  HELL FREAKING YEAH! :)

I never liked Hall in the run it up the gut kind of style Hyde does, but he probably does hit holes better, and could run away from guys where Hyde really doesn't do that.  I'd like to see both of them get carries.  Hall would be more of a weapon to toss the ball too on the edges though.

The plan was to split Hall out a lot this season, if they continue to do that next year they will have no problem getting Hyde or Smith or Dunn or whomever on the field.  Plus that is likely where Marshall or Taivon would play, so they can learn from a veteran.

Also one thing I like about college football versus the pros is loyalty.  This is a kid that has put a lot into this program and now we not only get a chance for some real leadership coming back, but a chance for him to get his degree.  I only see this as a win-win.

It is hard to read some of these comments.  This should not be about incoming recruits being better or not, or Hall costing someone a scholarship.  This should be about a 22 year old kid who has given years to the program and helped it in so many ways having an injury and wanting to come back another year.  If the incoming recruits are "better" than they will take some snaps away.  At RB, it's about more than just carrying the ball.

I don't know what Hall will decide is best for him, but if he wants to redshirt, I see absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be granted if it's legal.

Get over the shiny new car that you may have next year, and remember that Hall was they only one who could move the ball last year at Miami, he helped us almost win the game at Purdue last year, and he scored a great TD against Florida to give us a chance.

Edit: A few of the comments at the top were those I was talking about; as i finished reading, many more were positive in regards to Hall.  Cheers to everyone haha

I agree, I don't understand why people are worried about him eating up a scholarship anyway.  He's going to help the team while the younger guys are learning how to play and adjusting to college.  He's been named a captain so clearly he's a good leader and can help mentor some of the young guys like Marshall and Elliot.  Not many Freshmen come in and just dominate.  Having an experienced, skilled player, playing in a significant position only betters the chance of having a national title contending team too.

He's not some useless player.  He's a good playmaker.

Nothing wrong with redshirting a talented freshman who doesn't have much of an opportunity to see the field because of high quality upperclassmen ahead of him.  I have faith the Urban will put his best players on the field.  I see no downside to another year with Hall.
