I wish I could make this into a poll.
I never thought any fan base could surpass my dislike for the fans of TTUN. But alas I never accounted for the incredible stupidity of such a large majority of Penn State fans. I think they have actually surpassed TTUN fans in terms of how intolerable they are. TTUN fans are generally just arrogant a-holes (M Man is a rare exception), not total wack jobs who support child-rape enablers.
So my fellow Buckeye fans - Do you dislike PSU fans more than TTUN fans now?

There was a post a while back about B1G stadiums and the stories about PSU fans were ridiculous. From personal experience, I'd say PSU and Wisconsin fans are both worse than scUM fans.
PSU fans are delusional (generally). UM fans are just stupid (generally). It's really a toss up, PSU fans are more annoying, UM fans you just have to hate.
Michigan fans:
Positives: smarter than PSU fans, more knowledgeable about football, can hold their liquor better, far better taste in food & wine compared to the Funyons eaters in Happy Valley, not on parole.
Negatives: haughty, whiny, boring, passive aggressive.
PSU fans:
Positives: Yuengling.
Negatives: violent, head-in-the-sand, boiling over with hatred, alcoholic, half of them are from Jersey or Philadelphia (same difference), will kill you and then melt down your Ohio drivers license if given the chance.
Verdict: PSU fans are more likeable.
Run Fido nailed it
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
both are terrible but tress put TTUN in their place for a while, he was doing the same to Perv state but they for some reason thought they were better than TOSU so i give a slight edge to the penn st fans but i def hate TTUN football more

My personal experience with TSUN fans hasn't been that bad. A few real winners but mostly ok.
I will always hate Penn state fans. A few of us were watching the 06 NC game and these penn state fans were awful to us OSU fans. Just openly shit talking. "I f'ing hate Ohio State," and the like.
I hate TSUN more than Penn St but I hate Penn st fans much more than TSUN fans.
went to highschool in PA, I will never hate a fanbase more than penn state.
I would typically reserve this stature to our hated rival tTUN fans. However, due to the countless and when I mean countless I mean hearing one guy call in to ESPN radio today and said that if Joe P. was alive, then he could answer and explain these "questions" the Freeh report brings up. Oh yeah, it gets better. He then went on to say that the Freeh report was not a real investigation that the NCAA should use (It was done by PSU themselves..HOW MORE BLIND OR IN DENIAL CAN YOU BE you know)??!! I almost went crazy in the car. So I do indeed feel this ignorance to something that should have been brought to light over 14 years gave Joe plenty of time to "explain" as well as all involved. PSU fans in denial as well as Paterno family are taking the cake and running with it right now IMO.

For me personally, MSU fans take the cake with Mich fans right behind them. All of the PSU fans denial through this whole thing has me really hating them but I have no personal experience with them.
Take your pick, you cant go wrong!
"Love my State, hate the football"
You run into a Michigan fan, you say "Go Bucks!" Then he/she will go "Ah, NO!" And you'll laugh and maybe have a conversation about it. Or, maybe you're at the grocery store, and you run into a Michigan fan while you're wearing an OSU hat, and you just give each other a scowl, shake your heads and move on. If you work with or around Michigan fans, you give sh*t all year long and pull pranks on them...especially during the week of The Game.
If you run into a Penn State fan, you hide your children. You do not talk football. You do not pass GO. You do not collect $200.
In other words...I hate Michigan. I hate their fight song. I avoid wearing their colors. I hate their stupid stadium and their stupid cheers. I respect the quality of the school, of course, but I hate their fan's attitudes about it and their football team. But I don't hate their fans.
I used to respect Penn State as a school. Not anymore. I used to respect Penn State's football team. Not anymore. I have never liked Penn State's fans. Now, I fear them.
Come On!! As fans we wear our emotions on our sleeves & will do anything to discredit fact truths innuendos or whatever else that will discredit our team. I for one feel empathy for all schools that have to deal with issues of controversy. I recall, wasn't long ago a lot of us were defending Tressel. In my opinion, there is no better game than COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!! The sprit and enthusiasm is the ultimate. I feel for the fans of PSU regardless of the fact Joe Pa did NOT do the right thing. They will (in time) will agree.
Well, EK, I hope you're right. But from what I've heard out of the mouths of former Penn State players, their students, their fans, and reading the comments on Black Shoe Diaries over the last few weeks, I'm not so sure.
WELL, only time will tell, but a true fan will know, even though they won't admit to it. PSU will survive & will be a team of excellence. Not today, not next week, or next year, they will be back. Just like OSU this year and seasons to come.
Damn that Yuengling. But as Sarah and Jason know, I offered them all the Yuengling they could drink, for real, if they only could have gotten to A2 early enough for my tailgate.
So that's one difference:
You say that like those are such bad things.
As is evidenced by M Man, Rational M and Hail, TTUN fans are way better than PSU fans. I know they may be the exception, but there are 0 PSU fans who have lasted on this site. Anyone remember M1EK? He pretty much represented his contingent like most every other PSU fan I have ever met. I may hate UM, but I know many UM fans and can have reasonable conversations with them. Every PSU fan I have ever met has an ego that is unmatched. It started when a couple from unhappy valley moved into the apartment complex we managed my senior year at OSU in '74. He was a PSU grad who seemed to take delight in putting down everything about the Buckeyes and every other Big 10 school. To this day I have never met a PSU fan who could be even close to rational when talking about football.
No contest, nit lions take the prize.
I'm going to play devil's advocate here, because I think the topic is stupid (stories of throwing urine bags and batteries take the cake easy -- nothing else compares to this kind of thing). I have a friend who did her undergrad at UM, and she helped organize the blood drive up there, battle against OSU. They won and were brought out on the field for the OSU-UM game, only to be pelted by trash and have drinks poured on them. Every school has their, let's call them undesirables.
I'll weigh in on this. I have the unique perspective of being a graduate of both Penn State and Michigan. (From this board's point of view, I suppose I couldn't be any worse even if my name was Matt Hayes.) I support both schools and root for both their football teams.
On game day, Ann Arbor has always treated my Penn State guests better than Penn Staters treated my Michigan guests.
I have been to one game in Happy Valley and it will be my last. I was with my fiance and we were walking from the parking lot to the stadium, and had to walk right past the gated tailgating area. A group of PSU fans began hurling full beer cans at both my fiance and I, with one can missing my fiance's head by a foot.
I mean, cuss me out all you want, but thowing full beer cans? I will never ever set foot there again.
I'm going to the Wisconsin/Penn State season finale in State College. No way am I going to wear anything to "provoke" those drunkards; my black winter coat will do.
"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter
Um fans > PSU fans any day of the week. The PSU norm is about as bad as the UM exceptions. UM fans are much more intelligent, they just have ego problems, brought on by the whole "public ivy" business. It isn't their fault. I would hope that I could sit in a bar with a UM fan, have a beer, and watch the Game, and talk football in a situation of mutual respect. I wouldn't once consider that with a PSU fan
Come on, M Man, we all know that Michigan fans, especially the ones who actually graduated from that first-rate academic institution, are for the most part 100 times better than the scary trolls from Happy(happy?!?) Valley.
But then there is . . . that damn Hail to the Victors thing that plays more often than the USC fight song, Ten Year War, Heisman endzone pose, Michigan fans always bragging about the series lead even though that lead was almost entirely built before Eddie Rickenbacker got his first piece of action, etc.
When Michigan and Ohio State fans meet it's like two rival lions meeting. Sure, they hate each other with a deep and loathing passion that knows no bounds and they'll fight it out to the death (metaphorically) if they so much as look at each other wrong, but at least there's mutual if grudging respect between the two. Then in comes the Penn State hyenas (new mascot anyone?) who make a lot of noise but are mainly just a pain in the ass to the lions (unless you get a pack of them together) and wait around for whatever scraps the lions chose to leave them.
And as stated before, I've been really impressed with all of the Michigan fans I've interacted with on here (M-Man's review of 3 and Out directly led to me purchasing the book) but the Penn State fans haven't really covered themselves in glory on here.
"Anything easy ain't worth a damn." - Wayne Woodrow Hayes
Huh? This is a serious question? Oh ok well then I'll do my best to stay on point.
There isn't a worse group of PEOPLE in the world than Penn State fans. Heck in terms of annoyance, Michigan fans aren't even in my top 5. Penn State, Michigan State, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Ohio State (I said it) are all far more obnoxious than UM fans. With that said, my 2-5 combined aren't as miserable, awful, and worthless as PSU fans.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Penn State fans are the worst in the nation. LSU & Wisconsin are right there with them. Michigan fans come after that.
PSU = worst fans out.
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
As a Michigan fan living an hour from Columbus, this ^^^ is the story of my life and I love every second of it. It's so much worse to see women and children in OSU gear. I cringe and I always want to tell the little ones that there's still time and that they don't have to go down that road. Of course, I tend to always grab a Maize Michigan shirt before I head out to the store.
I haven't really encountered too many PSU fans, except at the '09 game @ Michigan where Daryll Clark had 4 long TD passes in a miserable game that hovered around 40 degrees and rained the entire time. Not a good situation to be in the section with all the PSU fans, but they were basically just cheering so I can't fault them for that.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Simply put... Beat Michigan! HUMILIATE, DOMINATE, and DESTROY Penn State!
I hate Michigan because I am a son of Ohio. It is in my blood to hate, so I hate.
I been to a sporting event (Football/Basketball/Volleyball/Hockey) on the campus of 9 out of the 12 (missing Neb, Iowa, Minn). The ONLY one of those universities I didn't wear my gear outside of the actual game was PSU. We pulled up to the dorms (friend's gf let us crash in hers) the night before the '09 game and saw four dudes in blue kicking the shit out of a guy in red. Scared the living crap out of me.
I hate Penn State for the simple reason that their sports fans are the single worst group of collective individuals I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I think it stems from the fan groups they come from (Philadelphia and Pittsburgh). Both fan groups (esp Philly) have a histroy of violence and being irrational. Think about the other fan bases in the B1G... OSU (Cleve and Cincy), UM/MSU (Det), IU/PU (Indy), Ill/NW (Chi), UW (Milw/GB), Minn (Minneapolis), and Iowa/ Neb doesn't really have any. All of those fan bases (while Cleveland fans can certainly get irrational) don't really have that violent mob personas/stereotypes.
Cause I couldn't go for three
In the spirit of this discussion, I offer this link to an excellent Onion editorial from a while back (it starts talking about fans about halfway through).
Hail,
Don't you mean a Sun Michigan shirt?
Easy, Penn State. I hate michigan, but I respect them. There is next to zero respect for PSU
PSU without a doubt. Aside from the Wal-Marters, actual Michigan alumni are not completely intolerable.
I live in the Toledo area and there are plenty of UM fans here. Most are OK. They are as passionate about their team as we are ours, albeit a bit too pompous about the whole thing, imo. Don't know too many PSU fans, but have heard nightmares about their home games. You hear the same from their fans about our home games. Think about it..How many schools have 50,000 or so people show up to NOT go to the game and get wildly drunk? Fun for us but not them necessarily!!
I will say this as tactful as I can. As a buckeye fan the Air Force has moved to SEC country in Charleston, SC the fans I despise the most are buckeye fans. My workplace seems like all the trolls from the message boards all in one place. I watch the games alone because I don't want to be cast in the same lot as the those. Judges by the company you keep I suppose. I have better football conversations with Michigan and LSU fans at work then fellow OSU fans, when I realized this a little piece of me died inside.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
JESTERTCF;
Stay with 11W in that case. Buckeye fans who can carry a conversation; who are (obviously) gracious enough hosts to tolerate somebody like me.
It really ought to be said -- 11W is a great place for ANY college football fans who have an interest in one of the truly great, historic football programs.
And thank you, most sincerely, for your service to the country.
I always have hated PSU fans more. UM fans have always struck me as pretty rational fans, for the most part. I've seen one PSU fan I know be a bigger hater of OSU than any UM fans I know. Plus, this whole child abuse scandal has shown some shocking ignorance from a shockingly high percentage of the PSU fanbase. Even my good friend that's a UM fan acknowledges that UM's showdown with Alabama is likely to be lopsided and not in the way he was hoping. It's not even close as far as which fanbase is worse and more hateable.
Class of 2010.
Every team has a good deal of idiot fans...I'll put our idiot Buckeye Fans up against anyone. We have the biggest fan base in the nation and probably more unlikable fans than anyone. We win, we win!!!
D. Anthony
I've visited both stadiums with TBDBITL.
scUM tried to grab our hats in the tunnel and threw food at our backs. I've met quite a few decent alumni through work/recruiting.
PSU fans threw bottles of piss at us (among other things). Plus, recent events have shown they are clearly irrational.
PSU is the worse fan base, but scUM is still the school I dislike more.
@RAMPAGERIPSTER, yes PSU fans come from Philadelphia & Pittsburgh. But don't discount New Jersey and NYC. A fair amount of them come from there as well.

In 2005, I went up to Penn State to watch us lose to the Nittany Lions. A couple of my friends went up there the day before and stayed with another friend of ours, who was there for grad school. We wore neutral shirts that night as he took us out on the town, making it clear that wearing an Ohio State shirt would be okay early on, but as the night wore on, would subject us to more than just harmless jeering.
The night went fine. We realized that Penn State fans, at least most of them, are clinically insane. Some of the things that came out of these peoples' mouths were nuts. To paraphrase, there are still a couple that I remember.
"If we had just one better wide receiver, we would have won three straight national titles!" (He was referring to 2000-2002, which absolutely blew my mind since they didn't even go to a bowl game in 2000 and 2001.)
"Kerry Collins is the greatest college quarterback of all time!" (Wow...just...no.)
And my personal favorite...
"The Big Ten should pay us extra money every year just because of the tradition we bring to their conference!" (I spat out my beer at that point and had to apologize to a hot bartender.)
So, in a nutshell, not wearing Ohio State colors made things tolerable for the night before the game. Fast forward to Saturday...
Of course we're going to wear our gear on Saturday. My buddy had a couple of his work friends over to his place for some cooking out. Like our friend, they did not go to Penn State for their undergrad. One was a Clemson fan who looked like he had done several years of hard drinking, and another was a Pitt fan, which he wore simply to piss off the locals.
While we're cooking out on his patio, which the back faced University Drive just southeast of the Bryce-Jordan Arena, Penn State fans are screaming as they walk by. At first, it wasn't bad, simply because they were just walking to their tailgate parties or whatnot and hadn't gotten liquored up. As it went from morning to afternoon, the yelling got much worse and included objects being thrown at us. At first, I thought they were throwing rocks until my friend got hit by one.
AA Batteries. I don't know if this is a tradition there or not, but it wouldn't be the last time it happened. Needless to say, my friend who lived there had to do some peacekeeping or else a fight would have happened.
We get to the stadium about an hour before kickoff and make our way around the people tailgating as much as possible. Expletives are being yelled at us that make me wonder if the state of Pennsylvania has an IQ about 50 points lower than the rest of the Union. Getting into the stadium wasn't too much of a problem and we got our seats in a small section of Ohio State fans, which really helped calm us down.
The game goes on and it was pretty enjoyable, with the exception of losing the game. We decide to get out a bit early since we had to walk back to our friend's house and wanted to avoid any more harrassment. That thought was quickly erased as we started to get pegged by more batteries, only this time, they were C and D cells. I caught one in the back of the head and ended up falling down in the aisle, luckily being caught by my friend before bad things turned worse. The policeman that was at the bottom of the aisle came up to us and also got pelted by a battery, though he caught it in the leg. We were escorted out for safety reasons and walked back with little problem, though we got the usual "FUCK OHIO STATE!" or "GO TO HELL, BUCKEYES!" comments along the way.
So, when people ask me which fans I hate the most, I list them in this order:
1) Penn State
2) Wisconsin (Beer cans being thrown at us along fraternity row after losing in 2003)
3) Michigan (It's a great rivalry, but I've never had a problem with a Michigan fan personally.)
I, for one, welcome our new coaching overlords.
My only problem with Michigan fans is that the majority of the ones I know are Wal-Mart Wolverines. Trailer trash kids where I grew up, who didn't even get into college in a lot of cases. The burnouts in high school who talk endless crap on Facebook.
The VERY few Michigan fans I know who actually attend the school or were accepted to the school are all great, actually. Never had a problem with them.
Also, I'm sure that my complaint about Wal-Mart Wolverines is just as bad when it's applied to some OSU fans. So I have no room to judge.
My mom is a Penn State grad, but I've never really known many Penn Staters. She still seems to be in a bit of denial regarding JoePa's involvement, but never really cared about football either (sold her season tickets in 1987, her senior year, when PSU ended up winning it all), so I haven't been exposed to many PSU fans.
With that said, the people at BSD are absolutely insane, delusional and downright annoying.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
You think BSD is insane? Good lord, you should go over to the free forum on the PSU Rivals site, BWI.
Those fans make BSD look intelligent.
I, for one, welcome our new coaching overlords.
I have no problem with UoM fans if they went there, or actually live/d in Meatchicken. I usually get frosted at the born and bred Ohioan who roots for TSUN just because. REALLY?!?!?!?!? They are the worst of their lot. Most of them don't know much about football, or their team for that matter. I can handle ribbing and the like, but when they get into "trolling" mode. I usually get up and walk away.
PSU just needs to go away. Plain and simple.
Team I hate the most: Michigan. Every single TTUN grad/fan I've encountered just seemed arrogant and misguided, but also rational and decent. I can't say that they would say any different about me. Its about a respectful dislike, and thats actually what makes sports so much fun. I hate losing to them, but I also hated when the team was bad, because it hurt my favorite thing about the sport: The Game.
Fans I hate the most: PSU, by a landslide. Living in a town thats infested with PSU grads, I've had my fair share of personal and anecdotal experiences. PSU's MO has been all about ruthless hatred which has left me fearing for my safety on several occasions and frequently verbally abused. I often get the feeling that they don't see "rival" teams as people, which is quite a scary thought. Part of why I thought the punishment against them was fair was because that was a part of their culture through and through. Not only did people of power lack any sort of empathy and and basic human compassion, but so do their fans on a very large scale (yes you will have your exceptions, but in my experience the rational fan is about 2% of the fan base).
My greatest wish out of this controversy of theirs is to take them down a few notches and re-evaluate their priorties. I know our controversy did that for me though it was on a much different scale. I really do hope that in 5 years I can have a chat with a PSU fan that leaves me feeling intrigued rather than befuddled.
I don't even know how this is a question, Penn State's "lunatic fringe" fans are the worst outside of 'Bama's. I refuse to villify the entire fanbase, since I met quite a few nice ones the last time they came to town (admittedly under sobering circumstances).
I think that our extreme viewpoint on them is relatively unique, though (as evidenced by @HAIL's experience). Since Penn State has no historical "rivalry" in the Big Ten,we've become--by default--their most hated team. This is further exacerbated since we've basically been the kings of the conference since Penn State joined in '94. Keep in mind, as well, that they were supposed to own this conference once they joined, which hasn't occured for them by a longshot. Because of all this, Penn State for us is the same as MSU for UM: we're their most important rival--and they subsequentally hate us for that--while they take a backseat to our biggest rival, which makes them hate us even more.
I think Hodge has summed this up perfectly. They hate us more because we ignore them.
LOL @ Doc. Heck, I didn't even know they considered us a rival until this year...
White-Out, 2005. We lost (I HATED that we lost). And of course I hated the white-out. But then I heard our band director said he'd never go back to PSU again because the fans were throwing crap at our band.
Classless. And their bitter, uncompromising defense of Joe P. and the scandal only adds to this perception.
I hope they enjoyed their share of a BIG 10 championship a little while back (now vacated). That's the best they're going to see for a long time.
I would have thought Happy Valley would be a cool venue to watch a game...but based on the above I won't plan on going there anytime soon.
I have a really good pictuer of sad PSU fans when they tried to white us out in 2009 and TP took it to them - I wish I could post it here, but I am not that savvy.
I hope we can beat PSU this year...it wouldn't look to good if we lost to all their "backups " and "walk-ons" that nobody wanted b/c they didn't have any "any good players" anyway.
Just sayin.
Penn State fans are worse. They were worse before Sandusky. During Sandusky. And after Sandusky.
I've always seemed to get along with Michigan fans.
The overwhelming majority has said PSU is worse. If this was the summer of 2001 [enter Jim Tressel, exit John Coooper], do you think your opinions would be the same?
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Hail, Most definitely I would still say PSU fans are the worst. The losing ways of Cooper were hard to take, but many UM fans were rational about the whole thing. Yes, there were obnoxious fans who went out of their way to make us feel bad, but most UM fans I knew actually wanted the rivalry to be competitive again, much like many of us in the recent years. Don't get me wrong, I hate it whenever we lose to UM. But, PSU fans have always been overly obnoxious.
First off I was born a buckeye, so by default i have to hate Michigan. Born in Ohio your a buckeye period. Now growing up in Ohio that though process was only reinforced by watching and interacting with scUM fans on a daily basis (I worked at cedar point and lived on put-in-bay for a few summers).
Now that IM an adult (debatable) I love living in Illinois and just crushing Michigan fan every chance I get, (i have kinda backed off since tat-gate), I have noticed that Im not the only one in the area that hates scUM, their are many illini fans as well as hawkeye fans that will jump in and annihilate a michigan fan any chance they get as well, hell even our newest addition cornhusker enjoys smashing a scUM fan as well. But after THE GAME we will all sit together and drink a few malt beverages of our choosing and start all over again for next year. Just good fun.
Happy valley is by far the scariest stadium i have ever seen (whiteouts really?)
"The only meaningful statistic is number of games won."....Woody Hayes..
We as buckeye fans are surrounded by douches from neighboring states. They both suck, but as of lately I have to give it to PSU. scUM are always going to be scUM though!
Wherever you are, there you be!
I've never had to deal with Penn State fans, so I can't say.
The only time I seem to get into heated arguments with Michigan fans is when i'm online. Face to face it's a somewhat friendly back and forth banter.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
@HAIL - That's an interesting point, it is worth noting that a lot of Michigan fans were twisting the knife on us pretty bad with the overall sentiment of "OSU isn't our most important rival, MSU's a bigger game". I was young, but my best friend would always say that to me, and it just infuriated me to no end. I remember Bob Hunter even writing a column during the RichRod debacle (when lopsided Buckeye wins were a foregone conclusion) about how OSU fans would be best served by not talking shit to UM fans, but instead playing up their rivalries with Wisconsin and Penn State: giving them a taste of their own medicine.
That's very interesting, Hodge. I assume those are Michigan fans in Ohio, which is rare. I understand them playing it down, though I never did. Both teams may go through stretches where there are better, or more impactful games than The Game, but anyone that truly believes that there is a bigger rivalry is sadly mistaken.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
