Hello and thank you for reading the Skull Session when I know you're all here today in anticipation of Jeff Pearlman's piece on the whereabouts of Brooks Melchior.

ICYMI:

  • Ohio State's 1916 throwbacks might be on tap as Ohio State's 2016 alternate jersey.

HELLO, YOUNG URBAN. Ohio State fans love their coach, but there was a dark time in his life from 1996-2000 when he worked at Notre Dame as a wide receivers coach.

We all make mistakes, and to Urban's credit, he took the first available train out of South Bend, complete with all the knowledge he learned under Lou Holtz and Bob Davie.

While perusing for Skull Session #content, I stumbled upon these old tapes of a young Urban coaching Irish receivers.

If this interests you, this is a YouTube wormhole:

IT WAS A GOOD RUN. Ohio State's magical run to the NCAA Tournament and its quest for College World Series bid ended on Sunday when Wright State delivered the Buckeyes their second loss in as many days in the Louisville regional.

An autopsy reports: "Died as he lived."

From landgrantholyland.com:

Ohio State baseball's season has come to an end. The Buckeyes dropped an elimination game in Louisville to Wright State, 7-3, to be bounced from the NCAA tournament.

It was a good ride for Ohio State, which finished 2016 with a 44-20-1 mark, including a Big Ten tournament title and its first berth in a regional since 2009. The Buckeyes will return to Columbus with a lot to be proud of.

[...]

Much like the first two games of the regional, Ohio State's usually reliable starting pitching got knocked around. This time it was freshman Ryan Feltner, who allowed six runs on nine hits in just three innings of work. That followed Tanner Tully's six runs allowed in four innings on Friday and John Havird's eight runs in two innings on Saturday.

Good news for Ohio State haters, at least. If the Buckeyes started locking down baseball championships they'd almost be out of places to hide.

NO THANKS. Imagine a Michigan Man coaching Ohio State. (Sorry.) It seems preposterous. Would wins still count as wins if they were led by a Michigan Man?

Crazily enough, this scenario played out in 1906.

From r/cfb:

Albert Herrnstein was his name. On top of that, he perhaps is one of the first high profile "traitors," an Ohio native who went to play for Michigan. He played on Fielding Yost's famous "Point a Minute" national championship teams, and in the 1902 Ohio State - Michigan game in which Michigan beat Ohio State 0-86, he scored 5 TDs.

After graduating, he started in head coaching right away, coaching at Haskell, and Purdue. He took over at the fledgling Ohio State program in 1906. That 1906 team threw Ohio State's first documented forward pass, and gave up no touchdowns that season. He promptly lead Ohio State to an 8-1 record and their first conference championship ever (Ohio Athletic Conference). The only loss was a very tough fought (6-0) game against That Team.

He coached at Ohio State for 4 seasons, and afterwards, became a successful businessman in his hometown of Chillicothe Ohio, owning a hardware store for over 50 years. He died in 1958 at age 76.

Imagine if Urban Meyer announced his retirement today because he wanted to pursue a career as a Wendy's executive. (Sorry again.) I would laugh, and then I would cry.

CURTIS SAMUEL LOOKING GOOD. Curtis Samuel is looking spry this offseason:

You don't want that work @shonrp2 #jumpman #jumpman

Samuel loves the spin move so much I expected it to be a full 360 dunk when he started. I guess he will have to settle for a 180 like I had to settle for a 0 as a kid.

TATE TRIMS LIST. Tate Martell, 2017's No. 1 dual-threat QB and Ohio State target, eliminated West Virginia from his recruitment Sunday and trimmed his list to his final five schools:

If the Buckeyes don't land him, I hope he lands in Boulder because Buffalo beating USC and Ohio State for a five-star prospect amuses me. (More serious analysis in last night's Hurry Up.)

THOSE WMDS. Taco Bell is good now, thanks to Marshawn Lynch... Old and on the street... I see why they called it Circleville... Cats I would like to own in art... The lost city of Cambodia.
