The AP panel also named Caleb Downs as its Big Ten defensive player of the year, an honor he also received from the conference’s official awards last week.
Julian Sayin, who earned Big Ten freshman of the year honors from the Associated Press (as he also did from the conference last week), is one of four second-team AP All-Big Ten selections from Ohio State along with running back Bo Jackson, tight end Max Klare and left guard Luke Montgomery.
The AP named Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza the Big Ten player of the year and Indiana coach Curt Cignetti the Big Ten coach of the year after they led the Hoosiers to a 12-0 regular season, a Big Ten championship win over Ohio State and the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
