With Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate both out for the game, Max Klare was Ohio State’s leading receiver, catching seven passes for 105 yards – the first 100-yard game of his Buckeye career – and a touchdown.

Caden Curry was the star of the day on defense, recording six tackles with two sacks and a forced fumble that he recovered at Rutgers‘ 1-yard line.

Key Moments

Q1, 5:47: Buckeyes stuff Rutgers on 4th-and-1

Rutgers attempted to go for it on 4th-and-1 from its own 29-yard line on its second possession of the game. Antwan Raymond found nowhere to go, with Curry hitting the Rutgers running back behind the line of scrimmage and Jaylen McClain coming in to finish up the tackle for no gain, giving the ball to the Buckeyes’ offense in great field position to set up their first touchdown of the day.

Q1, 4:01: Jackson runs for 15-yard touchdown

After fumbling at the 1-yard line on Ohio State’s opening drive, Jackson made up for it on the Buckeyes’ second possession by running for a 15-yard touchdown, following pull blocks from Luke Montgomery and Bennett Christian through a hole before making a free defender miss on his way to the end zone for a score.

Q2, 2:27: Inniss touchdown caps 98-yard drive

With the aid of excellent pass protection from Peoples, Julian Sayin connected with Brandon Inniss in the back right corner of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown, capping off an 11-play, 98-yard drive to give Ohio State a 14-3 lead.

Q3, 7:40: Curry nearly scoops and scores on strip sack

Curry came very close to scoring a defensive touchdown when he beat Rutgers left tackle Tyler Needham around the edge and knocked the ball out of Athan Kaliakmanis’ hands, then scooped the ball up himself and nearly landed in the end zone on his fumble recovery.

Curry was ruled down at the 1-yard line, and Ohio State nearly squandered an easy touchdown opportunity when Ethan Onianwa – in the game in relief of Montgomery at left guard for just one play – was called for holding on 2nd-and-goal. But an 11-yard touchdown pass from Sayin to Klare on 3rd-and-goal extended the Buckeyes’ lead to 21-3.

Q3, 2:30: Jackson scores again

Jackson scored two touchdowns in a game for the second time in his career as he took a toss for a 10-yard score late in the third quarter to make it a 28-3 game.

Q4, 4:17: Peoples runs for 49-yard touchdown

After scoring two touchdowns one week earlier vs. UCLA, James Peoples drove the final dagger through the Scarlet Knights with a 49-yard touchdown run that extended Ohio State’s lead to 42-9.
