Florida State University has relieved longtime Doak Campbell Stadium public-address announcer Woody Hayes of his duties, setting off a brief but intense period of confusion among Florida State and Ohio State fans.
Hayes said he learned of the decision by phone call after 16 years in the booth.
“I’m hurt. I’m deeply hurt.”

It’s a voice that everyone who goes to a Florida State football game knows.
Woody Hayes spoke to @WCTV how he was blindsided by the University’s decision to relieve him of his public announcer duties at Doak, but especially, how he found out. pic.twitter.com/ow5uCaM0zm
"I'm more than happy to take constructive criticism," Hayes said. "But I've received nothing like that. I'm hurt. I'm deeply hurt."
As of now, Hayes plans to stay on as the voice of Florida State men's and women's basketball.
"I'm always going to be a professional in what I do, but awkward is probably a good word," Hayes said to WCTV. "I'm probably looking over my shoulder wondering if the hammer is going to drop in basketball, too."
