Since 2000, Ross-Ade Stadium has been a House of Horrors for Ohio State football, creating unease for Buckeye Nation each time their favorite team travels to West Lafayette.
This year, however, the gap between the Buckeyes and Boilermakers may be wider than ever before.
Ohio State arrives in Northwest Indiana with the nation’s No. 1 defense and one of college football’s most explosive passing attacks. Purdue, meanwhile, is in full rebuild mode under first-year head coach Barry Odom — mired in a seven-game losing streak and still searching for its first Big Ten win. Even the 2018 Boilermakers, who stunned Ohio State, had future second-round pick Rondale Moore leading a respectable 6–7 squad. Reaching six wins isn’t even on the table for this year’s team.
Then again, Purdue pushed Michigan to the brink in Ann Arbor last week. That’s motivation enough for Ryan Day to keep his team locked in, maintaining the same edge that’s fueled their dominance week after week — no matter the opponent. Even if, for many Ohio State fans, the next three games feel like little more than appetizers before The Game at the end of November.
“If you watch the film — which I know everybody in our building is — they’re getting better every week,” Day said on Wednesday. “It’s important to look at where each team is and where they’ve come from, and you can see their progress in all areas. They played really well last week; that game went deep into the fourth quarter. It’s a team that’s improving. They’ve lost some close ones recently, so we’ve got to play our best.”
