Mickey Joseph was LSU’s wide receivers coach from 2017-21, so he knows what greatness looks like.
Now that he's leading Grambling State, the head coach also realizes that his team was no match for Ohio State on Saturday, as the Buckeyes blew out the Tigers in shutout fashion, 70-0.
That said, he was proud of the way his team performed while also giving plenty of credit to OSU as well. Joseph said that the Buckeyes are not only really good, but have what it takes to win back-to-back national championships come January.
“They're a really good football team over there. I'm sure they're going to be playing after January. I know what they look like. I won one at LSU, so I know what they look like.”– Grambling State coach Mickey Joseph
While continuing to compliment Ryan Day's team, Joseph couldn't hold back when it came to discussing Jeremiah Smith's greatness. The sophomore had a game-high 119 yards and two touchdowns on only five catches, all of which came in the first half. During his five years leading LSU's wide receivers, Joseph coached plenty of great wide receivers, with Ja'Marr Chase being atop the list. The head coach believes Smith is comparable to Chase, who is arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL.
“He's a little longer (than Ja'Marr Chase), but he's a dude. He could've played for me at LSU, could've been in that lineup. The route running, the speed, his hands and he's tough. We hit him one good time and he just popped up. He's a first-round pick.”– Grambling State coach Mickey Joseph
Much like he did in the week leading up to the matchup, Joseph knew that his team didn't stand a chance against Ohio State. Not only because it's not an even playing field as the Tigers are an FCS school, but due to the Buckeyes are the top-ranked team in the country and among the best in college football year in and year out, too.
With that, Joseph brought up the difference in funding between Ohio State’s roster and Grambling State’s roster as the Buckeyes’ players are reportedly receiving up to $35 million in revenue sharing and NIL money this season.
"What do they have, a $35 million roster? I don't have a $35 million roster. Maybe we could put our money together and we could come up with $35 million but I doubt it."– Grambling State coach Mickey Joseph
