The groundwork for Jones' departure from Ohio State was laid back in May, when academic issues prevented his enrollment at the university. He announced that month in a since-deleted Instagram post that he'd be taking a year at a prep school or junior college to focus on his “development.”
Just five days later, the Cleveland native decommitted from the Buckeyes and reopened his recruitment. Rutgers, considered the leader for his services before Ohio State won his signature originally, won out Jones' re-recruitment.
The Buckeyes ultimately only signed two recruits stateside in the class of 2025, landing four-star forward A'mare Bynum and three-star point guard Myles Herro. German guard Mathieu Grujicic also joins the team as a freshman in 2025-26 from the international ranks.
