INDIVIDUAL SACKS IN A SEASON (27)
Derrick Tho
mas got to the quarterback 27 times for the Alabama Crimson Tide during the 1988 season. Most schools had begun recording defensive statistics by 1980, although the NCAA did not begin doing so until 2000. Since then, Terrell Suggs has come closest with 24 sacks as amember of Arizona State in 2002. The only other player since 2000 to hit 20 sacks was Louisville's Elvis Dumervil in 2005.Most teams today will double teama player who is capable of wreaking thatmuch havoc on the quarterback, making it unlikely that one player will ever break Thomas' record.
Happy hate week everyone!
I was reading an article from last year surrounding the top 10 unbreakable records in college football. Among them is the single season sacks record held by Derrick Thomas at 27 (unofficially) and officially it is Terrell Suggs at 24. Young has now recorded 16.5 sacks this season and I know it would be quite a task for him to break that [unofficial] record but who knows with 3, maybe 4 games left - especially if other teams are forced to play catch up and rely on their passing game. And the dude is a freak of nature - let's be real. What is even crazier to think about is if he played vs. Maryland & Rutgers, he would likely be in the 20's already. If he averages 2 sacks per game the remainder of the season, assuming we make it to the championship game, he would beat that [official] record of 24.
In regards to missing the two games - what's done is done. I wouldn't count the young man (no pun intended) out in regards to passing that 24 mark.
As it is hate week, I'm curious what everyone's predictions for his stat line will be this upcoming weekend.
My prediction: 8 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 TFL, 1 FF - I'm assuming here TTUN plays smart and doesn't go after his side of the line and they double/triple team him.
Go Bucks!
