There has been a lot of talk about what Justin Fields stats might look like, had he been forced to play in the 4th quarters, and in some cases, the 2nd half of the games, to this point. There isn't an easy way to get a comprehensive list of "snaps played" for teams around the country. We know our diligent staff members go through and track OSU snap counts (Thank You!), but that is not the case around the country.

So I went with usage rate instead. Essentially it is this. How many opportunities does the given player have to make a play. So for a QB, it is passing attempts + rushing attempts (including sacks, since that was a designed pass play). Very simple, but I was still interested in the findings. Honestly, it is a better way to look at it than just snaps played, as not only does it capture how long guys are playing, but also, how often they are used when they are in the game. I went through every Heisman winning QB this decade, and added in a few former Buckeye greats, and other relevant players.

Opportunities Per Game

  1. Lamar Jackson (2016) - 50.1
  2. Deshaun Watson (2016) - 49.6
  3. Johnny Manziel (2012) - 48.8
  4. JT Barrett (2016) - 44.9
  5. RGIII (2011) - 44.7
  6. Dwayne Haskins (2018) - 43.7
  7. Joe Burrow (2019*) - 41.6
  8. Braxton Miller (2012) - 40.1
  9. Jalen Hurts (2019*) - 40.0
  10. Cam Newton (2010) - 38.8
  11. Marcus Mariota (2014) - 38.6
  12. Kyler Murray (2018) - 36.9
  13. Baker Mayfield (2017) - 35.8
  14. Jameis Winston (2013) - 33.7.
  15. Justin Fields (2019*) - 31.3
  16. Troy Smith (2006) - 29.5
  17. Tua Tagovailoa (2018) - 27.5

(*) Year-to-date

  • Justin Fields would be the least "used" QB to win the Heisman since former Buckeye Troy Smith
  • Troy Smith is the last QB to win the Heisman Trophy without 30+ opportunities per game
  • In 2018, Tua received nearly 10 less opportunities per game last year, than Heisman winner Kyler Murray
  • Dwayne Haskins was the most used "Pro-Style" QB. (I'm sure Air Raid teams may have had a more used QB, but I only included nationally relevant players and teams

I think we have all came to terms that it is very unlikely Justin Fields steals the Heisman for Joe Burrow, but it is still ridiculous to see how successful OSU has been, without relying on an all-world talent like Justin Fields.
