Can the Decision to Attempt a Late Fourth Quarter Field Goal Be Questioned?

In last year's loss to PSU at State College, on fourth and short from around the Penn State 30, Urban ordered a late fourth quarter field goal with a four point lead. Conversion would have left the Lions needing a touchdown in order to have any chance of winning. Guess what? Down by four, they already needed a touchdown!

We all know what happened. Kick was blocked... Touchdown Penn State...Ball Game. Even before the attempt it occurred to me the Bucks should have gone for the first down, which would have pretty much iced the game, or punted to pin the Lions inside the ten.

Urban faced the same choice yesterday. Late in the fourth with a four point lead and the Buckeye defense playing well, Urban ordered a 49 yard attempt. This time, fortunately, the kick sailed wide!

It's easy in hindsight, but at that point in yesterday's game, and as in the Penn State game, we didn't need those points. Why risk a potentially game changing field goal attempt when a successful conversion leaves the opponent needing the touchdown they already needed?

All's well that ends well but with the PSU outcome in mind, would a better strategy not have been to attempt to ice the game with a first down or punt to pin the Wolverines deep?
