Can someone explain why so many conferences have divisions ? I recently heard that the Big12 was going to have a conference championship game starting next year but will not have divisions. They will simply have the top two teams play each other for the CC. This makes far more sense in that it actually pairs up the two best. We have watched the SEC, Big10 , ACC, etc... repeatedly have conference championship games that are between the best team and an opponent that is not even 3rd or 4th best in the overall conference. This year in the Big10 it could be argued that neither of the two best teams played in the CC game So, why have divisions, what is the advantage ??
