Conference Championship Games - Can You Lose and Still Make Playoff?

I am of the belief that Ohio State did not deserve a spot in the CFP this year.  I am not sold on Alabama, but it is what it is at this point.

For the last two years, a non-conference champ has been included in the playoffs.  This has got me thinking, if Ohio State last year ran the table in the regular season but lost to Wisconsin, would they have been left out?

If Alabama beat Auburn, but lost to Georgia, would they have been left out?

So it begs the question:  Will a team that loses it's conference championship game ever make the playoff with the current criteria?  Is it fair that you could potentially lose your toughest matchup of the year, but a loss to a potentially lessor opponent is considered ok so long as it is not in your championship game?

Again, not trying to make a claim for any team this year or in other years, but is this a flaw that could potentially be exposed in the current playoff system? Could this result in one of the "4 best teams" being left out? Or, if they ever allow a conference championship game loser in, would that completely devalue the championship games?

Since winning your conference championship does not necessarily get you a playoff birth, should losing your conference championship eliminate your playoff chances?
