New week, same suspects:

  • Tennessee was blown out by Missouri, 50-17. The Vols are 4-6 overall and 0-6 in the SEC. The players have expressed the dreaded voice of support for Butch that is often a precursor to termination. Tennessee is a charter member of the SEC going back to 1932 and in 85 years has reputedly has never finished a season without winning at least one conference game. They have two games remaining, both at home against 7-3 LSU and Vanderbilt, which is also 4-6/0-6, which means the loser is likely to be the conference doormat.
  • On the other side of the SEC is 4-6/1-5 Arkansas. Bert's got to be out of time. The problem is Arkansas probably can't afford his buyout.
  • Illinois is 2-8/0-7 but the bar of expectation is so low in Champaign that Lovie will likely survive to fight another year. He was AD Josh Whitman's first hire and that dubious honor will probably save him.
  • Nebraska is 4-6/3-4, has lost four of its last five, and has PSU and Iowa remaining. Scott Frost is the hot name, a Nebraska alum, and new AD Bill Moos has spoken glowingly about him. Riley has to be toast. Moos may have one shot to bring a state hero home again but the Florida job is already open and the Gators have him on their short list. Moos will have to make a move fast and can't afford to make an insulting, low bid offer.
  • Kansas is 1-9/0-7. Coach David Beaty is 3-31 in three years, 1-24 in the Big XII. Their closest loss this year was by 10. The AD gave Beaty a vote of confidence back in September but he's got to be reconsidering. They're only paying Beaty $1.6M so his buyout can't be that extreme. They had fewer than 22,000 fans at their last home game, which was a 38-9 blowout loss to then-winless Baylor.
  • Jim Mora continues to underwhelm at 5-5/3-4 UCLA despite having a QB that Mel Kiper has as the overall #2 NFL pick.

Oregon State, Ole Miss and Florida are all currently open. Aside from the usual chess pieces moving around the board voluntarily when a successful coach is hired away from his school (e.g., if Florida were to hire Mississippi State's Dan Mullen), there's always at least one surprise opening (Kevin Wilson).
