Seeing a lot of tweets about the Silver Bullets working on a 3-2-6 defense. Anybody have any info on this? Is this something new this year? I thought we'd be primarily a 4-2-5 this year. Is the 3-2-6 a passing downs defense?

Thought it may be a way to get more DBs on the field in the spring to evaluate. OSU has quite the roster in the defensive backfield for 2013 and it may be a way to get a good look at them all. After the spring game they can evaluate for fall depth charts. Just a thought as opposed to inside info that you requested..
It is to supplement the "bump them down tackling concept only allowed at OSU" so that when the runner regains his balance after the missed bump tackle there are more players to try to bump him down again before he gets a touchdown.

The 3-2-6 was used in third and long situations at practice and was pretty effective.
3-2-6 = Your secondary is much deeper and further along than your linebackers, so why not see if something like that works for certain scenarios.
Is this different than a standard dime package? I've read bits about how we used two stars, 2 CB, and 2 safeties, instead of the more traditional dime with 3 or 4 cb. Is this the difference?
i like the 3-2-6 in madden actually. with this team i think a 4-1-6 would be better where shazier is only backer since our dl may be stronger than our lb's

I was thinking this as well. With Shazier, he is so fast its like 7 db's, but you are not sacrificing the run stopping LB because, lets face it, its Ryan Damn Shazier.
2 star guys?
I really doubt they'll be running that too much in actual games out side of like 3rd/4th and 10+ yards. Michigan's attempt at using the 3-3-5 was one of the most pathetic strategies I've ever seen.
One question.....how would this fare against the likes of Bama?

All practice reports seem to indicate they are experimenting with this and only used it in 3rd and long situations to bring exotic blitz looks.
Rest assured that we are not going to line up in a 3-2-6 when a team is going to line up with a TE and a FB and run Power at us.
It actually makes a lot of sense since typically in long yardage situations we often drop our Leo into a zone and only rush 3. If you are going to only rush 3, why not keep Spence and Washington rushing the passer (their strengths) instead of feebly dropping into coverage where they aren't so comfortable? The 6th DB then can provide coverage like they know how, and if we want to pressure instead of play a safe zone, then we have a lot of options for blitzing from a variety of confusing angles. Practice observers noted that the blitzes from the 3-2-6 really confused our O-Line and Braxton and were very effective.
Time will tell if this is something we will use, but it seems like it's worth trying out in long yardage situations.
Well we have recruited some tweener DBs and Lbs like Burrows, Worley, Lee. So I could see this going forward where one of those 6 is essentially an LB.
Makes a lot if sense with a young and untested front seven (five.) Like others have said, having that many guys in the secondary scares me, unless it's used sporadically. I get frustrated when there's no pressure on the QB and the o-line can just double every hand down lineman. We saw last year how the more aggressive D led to a production increase. Hopefully, these "exotic blitzes" coming from this package will do more of that.
Don't give up... Don't ever give up.
I thought I read they were practicing it against some specific spread situations.
When I saw this topic, that was my first reaction.
Situational to stop teams from spreading us out and burning us like earlier on in the year.
Like ODEEZ said, I feel like a 4-1-6 would be more appropriate. Especially if TP (TYVIS!) is challenging for time in the secondary and some of these young guys step up in the fall. It remains to be seen but our incoming DBs are BIG and like to lay wood.
Either or, I like that Fickers (or Withell) is experimenting to help out the D, schematically speaking.
Sounds like they're running 4 safeties out on the field in their version of the 3-2-6 correct? Got to think Von Bell will be in the mix come fall practice. I'm sure they'll find a way to get him on the field in certain situations.
I hate the Patriots but I really thought their defense was effective on obvious passing downs when they wouldn't have a down rusher. All 11 players would be standing up and the offensive line had no idea who was rushing and who was dropping back. Sometimes they wouldn't rush anyone and they would go max zone with 11 guys dropping back. I really like this idea of a 3-2-6. I think we could be very quick to the ball.
I'm generally not a fan of 3-2-6 packages because it gets hard to put pressure on the QB without blitzing. But you can get realllllllly creative if you want to blitz, and I'm sure that may have been part of what gave our OL problems last practice.
It depends on how you define "blitz" if you are allowed 4 rushers without calling it a blitz I could see how it would be easier to get pressure by confusing the line about who is rushing besides the front 3. Then if you have an athletic enough end (Noah Spence) you could even rush 2 LBs or DBs without calling it a "blitz" and still dropping 7 into coverage.
Here's a question, do you think someone on staff at every B1G school reads this blog and others to get "insider" info like this. I mean I think it's a good idea, like if we have a grad assistant read MGoBlog, etc. just in case something like this shows up so you know they are practice the formation just so it's not a complete surprise if they bust it out.

I'm going to go ahead and assume sarcasm... I'd say most B1G schools watch film. They don't have time to read blogs.
This will not be a base package...nothing to worry about with ppl stealing or getting info.

Just because you have someones playbook, doesn't mean you can stop them.
