Eleven Dubcast: Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Break?

Break time! Summer is usually the time when the Dubcast slumps toward our subterranean cave and lives off the stores of fat we've accumulated from salmon and grubs during the football and basketball seasons, but since we've decided to go hardcore weekly, on season and off, we figured that the fourth of July weekend was a good time to have a bit of a respite from our usual Dubcast duties (also Beau and I are both out of town).

Regardless, content is the name of the game on the internet 2.5ish or whatever number we're up to, so I'm not going to leave you hanging high and dry this week. Not only will you get to relive five of the most popular Dubcasts of all time, I've also got some interesting guest data for you all to check out.

So let's start with that. The Dubcast began in late 2010, when Luke Zimmermann and I came up with the idea to do a weekly show here at Eleven Warriors. It's been going ever since, and in that time we've been pretty consistent about putting out a show on a regular basis.

iTunes currently lists the Dubcast count at about 116 podcasts, but that only includes what we've produced since we switched over to SoundCloud; there is a roughly equal amount that were created via our first platform, meaning that we've done literally hundreds of shows in the past six years or so, and it's crazy to think that I've been part of almost every single one.

So I was thinking about this, and given that we've been around so long, I wondered what our guest breakdown looked like. It took a while, but I went back and catalogued every single (probably) damn guest we've had on the show, and the results were interesting.

  • Since 2010, we've had 114 guests on the show
  • Of those 114 guests, 60 have been sports reporters or other other media personalities
  • 16 different members of Eleven Warriors have come on to either guest host or be interviewed
  • 38 players, recruits, parents of players, or former players have been a guest

What's also interesting is who have appeared as repeat guests. For instance, Scoonie Penn was on the show recently. I knew that he had been on before, but in fact that was his third appearance on the Eleven Dubcast. Maurice Clarett has been on four times, the most of any player.

As far as the 11W crew goes, our various recruitniks have been on the most, to no one's surprise; Birm, Alex, and Andrew combine for 12 Dubcast appearances. Tim Shoemaker has been on five times alone, as has Ramzy.

Anyway, the point with all of this is to ask you who you would be interested in on having us talk to! We've had Joey and his dad (we'll get to him in a second), we've had random dudes from Mattaritaville, and a number of weird and unsavory randos from reporters covering teams Ohio State was about to play that week. So let us know, and we'll see how we can get them into play in the near future!

Okay, the grand finale: here are some of my favorite Dubcasts in the last several years, where I looked at both how popular they were, and how much fun they were to record. Unsurprisingly, they are pretty heavy on 2014 content, but hey, why wouldn't they be?

#5: National Championship Week

This is a monster of a Dubcast, clocking in at an hour and twenty minutes of championship fun with Chris Spielman and Matt Finkes.

#4: John Bosa Dishes About Joey and Nick

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes | Soundcloud | Stitcher | RSS

I will never, ever stop finding it funny that our interview with Joey Bosa's dad got literally thousands of more listens than when we actually interviewed Joey himself. It's all earned too, because John is hilarious and awesome.

#3: Mo C Working For a Purpose

As I mentioned before, we've had Maurice Clarett on a number of times. I'm always fascinated by what he's up to and how his life is going, but in this Dubcast, where he talks about helping to improve the lives of kids in Youngstown, his story hits me right in the heart. Godspeed my dude.

#2: Sometimes Things Just Work

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes | Soundcloud | Stitcher | RSS

I'll admit that I'm not a natural podcaster. I have a weird voice, my cadence is all off, and I repeat myself a lot. Like, a lot. Just keep repeating myself. Don't know why. A lot.

Anyway, sometimes a magic switch is flipped and things work out. This isn't a super significant Dubcast, but I just really like the rapport that Beau and I have here. It's fun, because when it's good, it's really good, and sometimes I get roped into drinking clamato and beer. Ugh.

#1: Scoonie Penn

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes | Soundcloud | Stitcher | RSS

If Beau and I could just rent recording space downtown and have Scoonie Penn come by for every Dubcast, I would do that. And if Scoonie could just go ahead and be in every piece of media that I consume from now until the end of time, I'd be okay with that too.

So that's the Dubcast this week! A fresh new Dubcast will await you next week, and as usual, check out the Dry Goods store to keep us humming, thanks to Travis for the logo, and we'll see you next time!
