Ohio State men’s hockey upset the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament to clinch a berth in the championship game.

In a Big Ten Tournament semifinal on Saturday night in East Lansing, the Buckeyes took down No. 1 seed Michigan State in overtime, 3-2, on a game-winning goal by Felix Caron.

Ohio State will now face Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament championship game at 8 p.m. next Saturday in Ann Arbor (Big Ten Network).

The Buckeyes, who are now 3-1-1 vs. Michigan State this season despite having a record of just 14-20-2 overall, took a 2-1 lead early in the second period of Saturday’s game on a power-play goal by Jake Karabela. After Michigan State tied the game late in the second period on a power-play goal by Porter Martone, however, neither team would score again for the rest of regulation, sending the game to sudden-death overtime.

Caron scored the game-winner for the Buckeyes less than three minutes into OT on an assist from Karabela, who earned First Star of the Game honors after scoring or assisting on all three Ohio State goals.

Ohio State will now face its rival with both a Big Ten championship and an NCAA Tournament berth on the line, as the Buckeyes’ losing record means they will need to win the conference tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid. The Buckeyes will be chasing their first win of the year against the team up north, as they went 0-4 vs. Michigan in the regular season.
