The No. 7 women’s hockey Buckeyes began the 2018-19 season in fine fashion on Friday evening. A veteran Quinnipiac squad was expected to provide a solid early road test for Ohio State. While the Bobcats gave the Bucks a little trouble, the Scarlet and Gray still came out on top.

Scoring by Period 1 2 3 Final
No. 7 Ohio State 0 1 2 3
Quinnipiac 0 0 2 2

Sophomore Amanda Zeglen started in net for the Buckeyes. She and Quinnipiac counterpart, Abbie Ives, were lightly tested in the first period. Each saw and stopped four shots on goal.

Neither goalie’s goose egg held. Early in the second period, a power play got the Buckeyes buzzing. Sophomore Emma Maltais notched her first goal of season seconds after the advantage expired. Senior blue-liner Jincy Dunne set up the score with her first helper of the year.

Buckeye Goal Scorers (Assists) Pd Time
Emma Maltais (Jincy Dunne) 2 3:03
Liz Schepers (Gabby Rosenthal) 3 10:22
Maddy Field (Emma Maltais) 3 15:15

The Bobcats answered less than a minute into the third period. Taylor House buried a feed from Sarah Coutu-Godbout. But Ohio State rallied. Midway through the frame sophomore Liz Schepers also netted her first goal of the season.

Senior Maddy Field made it 3-1, OSU, on a feed from Maltais. This would turn out to be the game-winning tally. Quinnipiac shoved an extra attacker goal over the line in the dying seconds of the game, but Ohio State prevailed 3-2.

As openers go, I think this was alright. It featured some sloppy, choppy play but nothing outside the norm of your typical early season action. The Bucks had some ups and downs but in the end, they were able to pull out the win over a respectable opponent.

The 1-0-0 Buckeyes conclude their series against the Bobcats tomorrow afternoon. Opening faceoff is set for 2pm ET. A live stream of the game can be accessed with an ESPN+ subscription.
