One of the only calm moments in Ohio State men's hockey's tilt with Penn State.

The men’s hockey Buckeyes started slow on Friday night. Ohio State struck four times in the third period but an extremely late Penn State goal forced the teams into bonus hockey. Here’s how it all went down.

Scoring by Period 1 2 3 OT Final SO
RV Penn State 1 2 2 0 5 1
No. 11/13 Ohio State 1 0 4 0 5 0

PSU jumped out to an early lead on a weird bounce which found its way past Buckeye goalie Sean Romeo. Kris Myllari was credited with the score. Ohio State battled back. Just like last Saturday, it was the Bucks’ grinders getting the offense started. Christian Lampasso knotted the game with helpers from Austin Pooley and Brendon Kearney. The tally was Lampasso’s third goal in two games.

The Nittany Lions regained their advantage in the middle frame. This time there was nothing fluky about the goal. Alex Limoges chopped the puck off a Wyatt Ege’s stick deep in OSU’s zone. He then potted the stolen rubber for a 2-1 Penn State lead. Kevin Kerr added a third PSU goal at the 14:14 mark of the second period.

Buckeye Goal Scorers (Assists) Pd Time
Christian Lampasso (Austin Pooley, Brendon Kearney) 1 18:47
Dakota Joshua (Tanner Laczynski, Freddy Gerard) 3 3:38
PP - Tanner Laczynski (Mason Jobst, Matt Miller) 3 4:33
Brendon Kearney (Christian Lampasso, Austin Pooley) 3 8:53
Freddy Gerard (Matt Weis, Tanner Laczynski) 3 15:35

Ohio State headed to the second intermission down 3-1. I don’t know what the Buckeyes did during the break but it worked. The team hit the ice in the third period and began to mount a comeback.

Dakota Joshua started the rally. Tanner Laczynski spied him lurking at the Penn State net. He sent Joshua a pass that the Maple Leafs prospect rang up for his fourth goal of the season. Laczynski himself authored the next Buckeye goal. He lit the lamp on Ohio State’s third power play of the night. The score tied the game at 3-3.

Then OSU’s grind line struck for the second time, giving the team its first lead of the game. This time Kearney recorded the goal with assists to Lampasso and Pooley. The tally was the first of the year for the Bucks’ junior.

Penn State knotted the score with a goal from Trevor Hamilton at the 12:25 mark. The Nittany Lions threatened to retake the lead. They went on the power play directly after tying the game. The Buckeye penalty kill rose to the occasion, though. Seconds after the kill, Freddy Gerard netted a fifth Ohio State goal.

But the OSU lead would not hold up. PSU had one final trick up its sleeve. Andrew Sturtz slipped a game tying goal past Romeo with seven-tenths of a second left on the clock.

Neither side could find the back of the net in overtime. (Though they obviously knew where it was by this point.) So the game went down as a tie in the NCAA record books. Penn State picked up the extra Big Ten point with a 1-0 shootout victory. Sturtz scored on his attempt for the Nittany Lions while Funkey shut out all three Buckeye shooters.

These two return to the ice for another contest tomorrow afternoon. If this game is any indication, it will be worth the price of admission. Opening faceoff is at 4pm ET.
