Ohio State freshman Tatum Skaggs is the WCHA’s latest Rookie of the Week. She takes over from fellow Buckeye Emma Maltais who last earned the honor. This is the third conference laurel of the season for Skaggs and the second time she has been named Rookie of the Week.

The accolade comes on the heels of Skaggs’ first collegiate hat trick. The pride of Hartland, Wisconsin accomplished the feat in last Friday’s 7-3 win over No. 9 Robert Morris. Her first goal came with seconds left on the clock in the first period. It would eventually become the game winner.

RMU put a dent in the Bucks’ lead in the middle frame, but Skaggs helped quell the uprising. She scored the next two tallies and put an end to any serious threat of a comeback from Bobby Mo. These three goals brought her season total to 11.

Skaggs tops both the Bucks and every other WCHA player in overall goal scoring. Both she and fellow rookie sensation Maltais (team and conference points leader) are producing 1.00+ points per game. They are the most dynamic freshman duo to don the scarlet and gray since program legends Laura McIntosh and Natalie Spooner.

Though her four point effort didn’t make the final cut, Maltais did earn an honorable mention for this week’s Offensive Player award. OSU blueliner Jincy Dunne was once again an honorable mention for Defensive Player of the Week. (It is approximately the forty-ninth honorable mention of the season for Dunne who is due to win of these things soon on her collective body of work, if nothing else.)

The No. 5 Buckeyes (11-3-2 overall, 8-2-2-1 WCHA) are back in town this week to host conference foe St. Cloud State. It will be the final regular season meeting between the teams. Ohio State swept the Huskies with back-to-back 4-0 wins in October.
