Last night Ohio State pulled off a huge comeback victory over No. 4 Boston College. On any other night it would have been the biggest upset in college hockey. However the Buckeyes’ victory was overshadowed by No. 9 Cornell toppling No. 1 Providence in the Florida College Classic’s matinee game. The Bucks were in no one’s shadow tonight.

The Scarlet and Gray got goals from eight different players and thirteen skaters registered points as Ohio State rolled over Cornell and skated away with the FCC tournament championship. Goaltender Christian Frey stopped 27 saves in his second victory of the season. It was the first shutout of the junior’s career.

OSU won the special teams battle decisively. The Bucks were 2-for-5 on the power play. Their penalty kill shut down all seven Cornell advantages and recorded a shorthanded goal to boot.

The Buckeyes’ gritty comeback against Boston College was perfectly in keeping with its plucky yet not particularly victorious first half. The Bucks have many a hard fought, narrow loss under their belts. However non one saw this sudden and total domination of a defensively tough Cornell team coming. (Well, no one except Wrenny the shelter cat.)

Perhaps a little confidence goes a long way. This was by far Ohio State’s most complete game of the season. It’s a great lead-in to the remainder of the Big Ten schedule. The Buckeyes look to keep this momentum rolling as the team heads up to Wisconsin next week to face the Badgers.

Other Big Ten results: Penn State defeated Clarkson 5-1 in the Three Rivers Classic consolation game.
