Ohio State’s non-conference opponent change for next season comes with some cost savings.

Per the game contract for Ohio State’s newly scheduled non-conference game against Youngstown State on Sept. 9, 2023, which Eleven Warriors received Friday from Ohio State in response to a public records request, OSU will pay YSU $800,000 for next year’s game at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State was previously set to pay San Jose State $1.8 million to play at the Shoe on the same date. That game was canceled by mutual agreement between the two schools, and San Jose State is now to play at USC on that date.

The payout for the Youngstown State, which will be Ohio State’s first game against an FCS opponent since it played Florida A&M in 2013, will be its lowest payout to a non-conference opponent (not including home-and-home series) since it paid only $375,000 to Cincinnati in 2018 for a game that was originally scheduled to be played in 2012.
