Former Ohio State wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez took a step closer to Congress on Tuesday night when he defeated state representative Christina Hagan in a hotly contested U.S. House District 16 Republican Primary.

Republican congressman Jim Renacci vacated the seat to run for Governor before switching to Senate. He, too, secured his party's nomination and will face Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in November.

A first-time candidate, Gonzalez called in former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel to help him campaign in the Cleveland-area district:

Gonzalez will face Democrat Susan Moran Palmer, who secured her party's nomination Tuesday night with 35 percent of the vote, in November.
