Many Buckeye sports started the new year off with a hot start, led by No. 1 Men's Volleyball downing No. 2 UCLA three sets to one on Saturday.

Men's Volleyball

The AVCA showcase took place over the weekend of January 6-7, headlined by the juggernaut matchup of No. 1  Ohio State vs. No. 2 UCLA on Saturday.

This win was huge for the Buckeyes entering the season, coming off a preseason loss against McMaster a week earlier.

In addition, Ohio State beat USC on Friday, also by a score of three sets to one. The two victories over the weekend helped the Buckeyes extend an already impressive win streak.

No. 11 Men's Hockey also hosted a marquee matchup, taking on No. 2 Penn State in a two-game series over the weekend.

The icers started the weekend strong, shutting out Penn State on Friday while coasting to a 3-0 victory. The Friday game featured goals from Drew Brevig, Luke Stork and John Wiitala.

However, the Buckeyes dropped the Saturday matchup to the Nittany Lions 4-2.

One highlight from the second game was senior forward Nick Schilkey scoring two goals in less than 45 seconds during the third period.

Women's Hockey

While the Men's team faced off against Penn State in Columbus, the Women's team traveled to face Penn State in State College, PA. Where the Men's team dropped a game over the weekend, the Women's team played nearly flawlessly, shutting the Nittany Lions out on consecutive days.

On Jan.  6, the Women's Hockey team thrashed Penn State 5-0, supported by a hat trick from senior forward Katie Matheny.

Maddy Field and Jincy Dunne also added a goal each.

The next night, the Buckeyes did not slow down, this time cruising to a 6-0 victory.

6 different Buckeyes scored goals on Jan. 7, including sisters Jincy and Jessica Dunne scoring one goal each.

Wrestling

Count the No. 4 Wrestling team among those who got off to a hot start over the weekend, as they downed No. 17 Wisconsin 23-15.

Nathan Tomasello, improved to 8-0 on the season with an 18-5 victory over Wisconsin's Michael Cullen.

Track & Field

Ohio State hosted the Buckeye Classic on Jan. 6, and came out blazing. Of the 31 events at the Buckeye Classic, Ohio State took home 21 of them.

The highlight of the day, however, might have come from sophomore Sade Olatoye, who set a new school record in weight throw with a throw of 21.63 meters. The previous record  of 21.53 meters came from Veronica Jatsek in 2008

Gymnastics

Women's Gymnastics also got a victory to start the new year, traveling to Pitt to take a 194.125-192.750 victory over the Panthers on Jan. 7.

Junior Alexis Mattern took the all-around title for the day, posting a score of 39.225.

 Women's Swimming

The Bucks beat the Toledo Rockets 168-64 on Wednesday, Jan. 4. They travel to Cincinnati to take on University of Cincinnati, Kenyon College and Oakland University on Jan. 13 and 14.
