Volume 7 brings 43 new players to the Big Ten.

The Leak In The Boat Is Fixed
PJ Fleck hit the trail hard to start the 2018 recruiting cycle. The early results were impressive, but his efforts stalled and one month he lost two recruits. In July, Fleck brought back the recruiting heat and added four new players to the fold.

The Gophers now lead the Big Ten with 23 commits.

It's Still Good To Be King
Meyer and the Buckeyes' 2018 recruiting class continue to lead not only the Big Ten, but the nation. Ohio State lost a little ground in the Big Ten, but extended its lead over Miami.

With more high-profile players on the horizon, Ohio State is in position to keep the top spot in the conference...and the nation.

This piece has information on:

  • 247's B1G Rankings
  • Comprehensive Stars Chart
  • Top B1G committed players by position and Ohio State's top offers
  • Charting the B1G's 2018 average player ratings
  • Charting Ohio State's committed players
  • Committed players by school
  • Open commit/decommit board in the comment section

The 2018 Composite Team Rankings as of 7/31/2017 according to 247

For the second straight update, Ohio State remains the top team in the Big Ten. However, Penn State and Michigan did make some ground on Urban Meyer's impressive class.

Four Up, Three Down
This cycle, the majority of the action occurred between spots four through nine. Wisconsin was the big mover this month and climbed two spots. Northwestern was the big loser by falling three positions. The Wildcats did not add a commit this cycle.

The other teams moving up the chart were Maryland, Michigan State and Indiana. The Hoosiers added five players and earned the most composite points in the Big Ten. The Terrapins and Spartans each gained three players and had double digit gains in comp. points.

Losing one place each were Nebraska and Illinois. Like Northwestern, the Cornhuskers did not get a commit this month. Despite receiving three commits, the Illini were passed by Indiana and are now in last place.

Races To Watch
Although Penn State and Michigan made a little ground on Ohio State, the Buckeyes should have little problem keeping the lead through National Signing Day. The intrigue in the Big Ten remains spots four through nine. Just over 14.5 points separate ninth place and fourth place and the jockeying of teams will be fun to follow going forward.

What do you think the final positions for Maryland, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State and Northwestern will be?

L'Christian "Blue" Smith will make his decision in August. The nation's No. 3 rated athlete is reportedly deciding between Ohio State and Kentucky. Smith is a talented football and basketball player.

B1G STARS BREAKDOWN

Ohio State and Penn State remain the only teams in the conference to have 5★ commits. The Buckeyes now have three and the Nittany Lions have one.

Jaelen Gill was recently bumped up and now has his fifth star. He joins Taron Vincent and Brenton Cox as Ohio State's 5★ players. Justin Shorter is Penn State's five star player. Like Gill, Shorter was bumped up. The Nittany Lions would have had two five star players, but Ricky Slade slid down to 4★ status.

Two B1G Movers
Penn State and Indiana had the largest upward trajectories this month. The Nittany Lions went from sixth to second and the Hoosiers moved up three spots to 11th.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As PSU went up four places, Northwestern fell four. Nebraska matched Indiana's three, by going from 11th to 14th.

Star Gazing
Nine players had their star rating change. As mentioned earlier, Ohio State's Jaelen Gill went up from a 4★ to a 5★ this cycle. Other notable players making the move from 3 star to 4 star were: CB Gemon Green of Michigan, QB Theo Day of Michigan State, OLB Jesse Luketa and OT Antwan Reed of Penn State.

93 percent of the Big Ten's commits are 4★ and 3★ players. To put Ohio State's recruiting in perspective, 25 percent of the conference's 4 star commits and 75 percent of the 5 star players are Buckeyes.

2018's Highest-Rated Big Ten Commits

A new name is at the top of the APB position. A player from Westerville, Jaelen Gill, overtook Penn State's Ricky Slade to take the No. 1 spot. 11 of the 18 positions have Buckeyes listed.

If you look at the players Urban Meyer has offered, the Buckeyes could have the best player at every position except for pro-style quarterback.

The Big Ten East still owns 15 of the 18 positions. Nebraska is the only team in the Big Ten West with players on the board. Will a team add a fullback this cycle?

There was little movement in the rankings this month. Nebraska and Penn State switched places at second and third and Indiana and Illinois did the same with 11th and 12th.

Meyer and the Buckeyes continue to have a massive lead over the rest of the conference. With more 5★ and 4★ players on the horizon, the 2018 Ohio State recruiting class could be one for the ages.

Nebraska, Wisconsin, Indiana and Purdue were the only teams in the conference to see an increase in their player averages. Indiana's four point gain was the biggest in the Big Ten this month.

Of the teams losing points, Penn State's 5-point drop was the largest.

Which teams do you think will rise and fall over the next month?

Urban Meyer is creating something special with the 2018 class.
