This is a post that is part self-reflection and part outward-facing-question.
Bo Jackson is one of a very few Buckeyes to hit 1k yards rushing their freshman season. And at Ohio State that means competing against some incredible names at the running back position. I find myself double-taking every time I read that because it feels like his hype and level of coverage is still somehow far lower than he deserves. And part of that is probably just me. I don't *think* about him the same way I did Tre, Dobbins, Beanie, etc. For whatever reason.
Maybe it's because he wasn't expected to be "that guy" this season, even though we knew he was talented. The stage wasn't set properly.
But when you dive into what he's done so far it's pretty amazing. Not only did he hit over 1k yards on just 168 carries during the regular/Big Ten season, he did it without even playing the first game! The kid has been a machine:
- 6.2 yards per carry
- 86+ yards per game (28th in the country while only getting 44% of our team's carries)
- 7 catches for 76 yards over the last 3 games
- 6 100+ yard rushing games (including 4 out of the last 6 games)
The biggest knock on his production is number of TDs because we take him out around the goal line, which is something I'm not sure we should be doing because CJ isn't uber-productive in short yardage for his size. Keep the dynamic kid in the game that has momentum. If Bo got even half of CJs touchdowns he'd be at 11 for the season.
For what we expected this season out of our running back room and Bo, he's somehow put together a top-tier freshman season at Ohio State, and he's done it quietly. The guy deserves a lot more praise than he's gotten so far.
