Commentariat, the 25th anniversary of this date is Monday and the game in which our esteemed 1998 squad fell inexplicably to Michigan State. It's legend shows up continuously in cautionary tales of woe for lesser teams to enjoy the moment each time you reach November undefeated and consider that sometimes talent and luck has to be on your side.
Matt Gutridge wrote a great synopsis of that day when he covered the 1998 team in his 100 teams in 100 days summer series in 2016:
Pictured above is my currency for why I found myself screaming at the tv in terror two Saturdays ago when Penn State's punt in the 3rd quarter hit Lorenzo Style's leg, just like one did to Nate Clements when I was a teenager. Ramzy appropriately drew attention to the parallel in this week's Situational.
"Green people. Hey Green people! Shutup!" I can distinctly remember another nearby future 11 Warrior shout just as the Spartans took the lead 25-24. Unfortunately, we were seated adjacent to the visitors section in the closed end of the 'Shoe. Remember the picture of Orlas King that runs its course every time Ohio State loses? It was from that game...https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio/2014/08/39051/the-crying-man
My only solace was when my father recounted on the drive home of his own private version of OSU hell in 1974, ironically to the same institution of higher learning from East Lansing. Members of that generation- you know what he was talking about. That game will have its own 50th anniversary next year on Nov. 9th.
For those of you old enough to have lived through it- are you like me and have memory of this day set upon a pedestal, to where each November 7th stirs up a jaunting recollection of thoughts?
