The younger McDonnell, who played basketball at UNH, was the running backs coach at Johns Hopkins last season. He also previously served as a quality control coach at Cornell.
His father, Sean McDonnell, has been the head coach at UNH – where he coached Day – since 1999. He missed last season while battling cancer, prompting a press conference tribute from Day in September, but he's expected to return to the sidelines for the Wildcats in 2020.
Tommy McDonnell, joins Billy Fessler, a former walk-on quarterback at Penn State, as new additions so far to Ohio State's staff of quality control coaches/graduate assistants for 2020. The Buckeyes have lost four quality control coaches/graduate assistants from 2019: Sean Duggan and Matt Thurin joined Jeff Hafley's staff at Boston College, Trey Holtz is now the inside wide receivers coach at Louisiana Tech and Chandler Whitmer is now an offensive assistant at Clemson.
