I was watching some film last night on our 2014 championship teams offense ala JT Barrett.
I noticed a few things different after they had a throw first qb come in.
-They adjusted the play calling to suit Cardale more (More counter, fake jet sweeps, 2 back sets)
-LBs still keyed in on Cardale as a runner ; However you want to cut it, Cardale was more of a running threat than Dwayne, his first step was quicker and he was much harder to take down in the open field
-OL blocked better ; I'm one of the few who thinks simply blaming the OL for the running game is a coppout and there are much more reasons for the lack of it.
-Ezekiel Elliott found the creases and was happy to pickup 3-4 yards ; Our Rbs especially Weber seem to be looking for the home run and get happy feet behind the LOS
-People still stacking the box, difference is there's only one running threat in the backfield ; On every running play , they're still at a man disadvantage in the box.
However, I also noticed how much worse our running game looked to start the 2015 regular season. LBs stopped keying in on Cardale as a runner and committed to shutting down Ezekiel Elliott and Curtis Samuel. Same thing happened in the UM game. Our run game heated up (though the last 2 series with JT we scored and were moving the ball) and then everyone was talking about how much better our offense would be with dwayne next season. then comes this season, we haven't adjusted the scheme and play calling one bit and Dwayne has every receiver and RB from last year returned and a 4-5 star offensive line and our offense has managed to regress EVERY week.
Urban used to be an innovative offensive mind but it seems like time has passed him by. Will he adjust or fade into obscurity?
