It was brought up in the game yesterday, but the # of targeting calls this year is way up and we have seen it too many time this year on Buckeyes. I agree with commentators that an immediate ejection is too harsh. So how do you change it to make this rule work (player safety vs. consequence)
1) Go to a soccer-like rule. First time during a season is a yellow card and PF penalty, 2nd time during the season is a red card ejection for the next 4 full quarters and PF penalty. This would keep the current criteria for targeting
2) Using current criteria add something about the player having to be judged to intend to inflict bodily harm. Without the intent to inflict bodily harm there would be no call. (for example, Bosa hit last week in Iowa would not fall into this criteria) More subjective but the rule seems that way anyways.
