We're 75% through the regular season. Ole Miss fired High Freeze before the season started, Gary Andersen has already resigned at Oregon State, while Florida and Jim McElwain "mutually" parted company last week. Other P5 head coaches on the hot seat:

  • Bret Bielema, Arkansas: 29-31 overall, 4-5 this season, 1-4 in the SEC, just barely beat a 1-8 FCS team 39-38--Arkansas needed a TD with 1:55 to play to seal the win. Bert needs to win two out of three against LSU, Mississippi State and Missouri to become bowl eligible. That still may not be enough.
  • Butch Jones, Tennessee: He's 4-5 overall but 0-5 in the SEC and burned a freshman QB's redshirt in the 8th game. The kid went 1-8 for 13 yards in a 24-10 win over Southern Miss.
  • Mike Riley, Nebraska: 19-16 in Lincoln, 4-5 this year, including four home losses; Nebraska closes the season @ Minnesota, @ Penn State, and home versus Iowa. It's highly possible Nebraska doesn't qualify for a bowl game or if they do, it could be as a 5-7 team, which is what they were when they played UCLA in the 2015 Foster Farms Bowl. UCF's Scott Frost has been called Nebraska's Jim Harbaugh--the prodigal son who needs to be brought home to revive a once-proud program. New AD Bill Moos raved about him in an interview last week. I don't see how he can pass on what could be a one-time shot at Frost.
  • Lovie Smith, Illinois: 5-16 overall, 2-7 this year, 0-6 in the B1G, including losses to Rutgers and Purdue, last year's doormats, and remaining games versus Indiana, which is the only other team without a B1G win, Ohio State and Northwestern. Lovie was AD Josh Whitman's first hire but I don't know how much more evidence he needs that it isn't working than losing to two programs that were a combined 5-19 last year, which is what Lovie's overall record could be at the end of this season.

Others on the edge:

  • Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech: He's 4-5 this year, 28-31 overall. Tech's only played in two bowls under him and needs to win two of three against Baylor, TCU and Texas to qualify this year.
  • Derek Mason, Vanderbilt: 17-29 overall, 4-5 this year, 0-5 in the SEC but has winnable games against Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee. The season finale against Butch could be a job saver for the winner and bye-bye for the loser.
  • Jim Mora, UCLA: 4-5 so far this year after going 4-8 last year. The Bruins need to win two of their last three against ASU, USC and Cal to become bowl eligible.
  • Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M: 5-4 this year but has three winnable games against New Mexico, Ole Miss, and LSU.
