Since that PS4 commercial with the coaches/players debuted a week or so ago, I've been licking my chops about a new NCAA title... Although the commercial doesn't elude to one, we can all hope and dream. I then thought about how the NCAA could go about releasing a new title, but still manage to get around the issue of using a player's likeness.
Here's my thought... Why not use former players? Make the initial rosters players who no longer play at that college? Start with a base roster/depth chart of former players, obviously you would need their permission to use their likeness, but how difficult could that be? EA already has the rights to a bunch of player likenesses for the Madden title.
My thought is, you use the teams that are in the power 5, and the group of 5. You pay for the rights to use the names of former players for initial rosters, and you build/develop the rosters through recruiting (which we all know is probably the part of the game that is most universally missed).
Call it, NCAA 2018, Legacy edition, or something catchy like that. The rosters could be comprised of a mix of all-time talent, some decent players, and you could just throw some scrubs in there to fill out the roster, then have the database of recruitable players be like prior years where it's just CPU generated names.
I know this isn't as good as what NCAA football used to be, but at least it's something. I just miss the game, it was the best sports game out there, and if they could do something like this to bring it back, I'm all for it. Just for fun here are a few names for the Buckeyes I'd like to see on the initial roster:
QB: 1. Troy Smith 2. Kenny Guiton
HB: 1. Beanie Wells 2. Jordan Hall
WR: 1. Santonio Holmes 2. Devin Smith
WR: 1. Joey Galloway 2. David Boston
DE: 1. Mike Vrabel 2. Vernon Gholston
I think the key would be to pick players that aren't in the NFL, but to a team's particular fan base, are still relevant. I think a solid mix of standout players and normal players, and then round out the roster with some guys who didn't make much of an impact, and you've got something.
Then you develop your team through recruiting as you did in years prior.
Just something I was thinking about, hell it would be better than the NCAA titles we've gotten over the last few years... (amirite?)
