Scottish funk. Two words that make no sense together but that is exactly what The Average White Band was. In fact, they were so good that James Brown's legendary backing band, The J.B.'s, paid tribute to them. So good that Average White Band has become one of the most sampled acts in music history. Not bad for some blokes from Dundee.

The band formed in 1972 and their second album, "AWB", reached #1 today in 1974. Powered by the #1 single, "Pick Up the Pieces", the album went platinum and established Average White Band as a force in the soul and burgeoning disco scene. The band would find further success with future singles "Cut the Cake" and "School Boy Crush".

If you know Eric B and Rakim's "Microphone Fiend" then you have heard "School Boy Crush". Average White Band has also been sampled by Too Short, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Ice Cube, Boogie Down Productions, NWA, Rick Ross, EPMD, Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane and countless others.
