Comedian Shane Gillis made jokes about both Ohio State and Michigan at Wednesday night’s ESPY Awards.

While talking about some of the nominees for Wednesday night’s Best Team award, Gillis – with the camera focused on Will Howard, his girlfriend and Gee Scott Jr. – pointed out that Ohio State “won the national championship, but also lost to Michigan.”

“Michigan, who didn't cheat this time. Beat them fair and square,” Gillis said.

With that, Gillis is an equal opportunity jokester. Acknowledging the wait for Michigan to be punished for the impermissible sign-stealing scheme that the NCAA began investigating in October 2023, Gillis quipped, “Are we ever going to hold (Michigan) accountable? Yeah, whatever, they're allowed to cheat, no repercussions.”

Addressing Gillis' last statement, the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions held a hearing for Michigan on June 6 and June 7. The results and punishments of that hearing have not been released, but will be made public on or before September 9.

In the end, we'll see if the NCAA or Michigan has the last laugh.
