The 11W Heart of It All Classic: Jesse Owens is Your Greatest Ohioan

After a controversial 24-hour runoff, sprinter Jesse Owens has won the 11W Heart of It All Classic and will be accorded the title of Greatest Ohioan.

When all precincts first reported, the Wright brothers held a one-vote lead, 381-380. The 0.13% margin of victory triggered a runoff, sparking protests from Wright supporters, which only grew louder as Owens pulled ahead for an eventual 548-537 victory.

Congratulations, Jesse Owens. Your list of accomplishments now include four gold medals, eight NCAA championships, and the internet's highest honor.

This was awesome! You should consider doing the following:

Greatest All-Time Player (football)

Greatest All-Time Play (football)

Greatest All-Time Player (basketball)

Greatest All-Time Play (basketball)

Worst Ohioan

Best Campus Restaurant

etc.

Great ideas. We've actually discussed a few of those and I'm definitely adding best campus restaurant to that list.

Is LaBamba still around?!  Burrito Bago?  I'm old-school.....

Knarcisi's picture

You going current and past?

Greek Village (Gyros) I don't think is there anymore, and there is no way to recreate the drunken state under which I ate many.

flying-banana's picture

I feel Jeffrey Dahmer probably has worst Ohioan locked down if he qualifies, and best campus restaurant is easily late night drunken Burritos Noches (assuming it's still open late, I'm old), or the Columbia Mexicano truck by the gas station on the corner lane and high.

I guess everyone needs at least one regretful trip to PJ's too.

Haha I ordered PJs a couple times freshman and sophomore year, and everytime I would get halfway through my sandwich and have no desire to eat the rest of it

Charles Manson and Larry Flynt would get some votes.

Burritos Noches is pretty bad, but the North Campus kids are essentially forced to eat there if they want to eat past midnight, since nothing else is open unless you want to walk for 10 minutes. Plus it's campus dining so I don't know if it really counts as a true restaurant.

I think the list would have these locations for sure:

  1. Buckeye Donuts
  2. Cane's
  3. Sicilia's
  4. Apollo's
  5. Plaza (which has fantastic burritos, but most people just go there to drink)
  6. Slice of NY
  7. Taste of Orient
  8. Currito

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

rampageripster's picture

That's blasphemous... Burritos was the best food I ate on campus (besides the blackwell)

Cause I couldn't go for three

OH_IO's picture

I had Burritos Noches twice last year.

The first time there was a hair in my burrito. Gross, but I'm a forgiving person.

The second time I got food poisoning.

Needless to say I'll be voting for anything but Burritos Noches.

Oh yeah... Is it reasonable?

William's picture

Pita Pit is solid too, little more expensive than Apollo's, but still good. Moe's is the best for a burrito if you ask me, and Eddie George's is just a solid sports bar. However, nothing touches the Top 2 of Buckeye Donuts and Cane's for me.

TheBadOwl's picture

I tried to avoid listing chains (except for Cane's and Currito) but yeah. Pita Pit is pretty solid but it's overpriced. I like Moe's but to me, Plaza has the best burritos in the University district. Currito is great too because it's different.

Also, Mad Mex has incredible burritos, but it's more of a sit-down place and you have to use a fork and knife, so I'm not sure it really counts in the burrito discussion. Great place, though.

And I do really like Eddie George's, but I haven't been there since my freshman year. It's good, but not really in a college budget.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

William's picture

Agreed on Mad Mex, but I haven't eaten their since my freshman year. I actually don't think a meal at Eddie George's is that much more expensive than eating at a place like Chipotle or Cane's. I've walked by Currito an endless amount of times, I'll have to give it a try. I don't know how far you've been down West Lane, but if you haven't had Piada it's worth the trek up West Lane.

If your list was "in order" from 1-4, I would put 2 of M*ch*gan's grand total of 3 Heisman winners at the top. Even Tom Harmon was from Indiana. Does their team do anything from within? Great list...Since I am from Dayton along with Brady Hoke, I would have him on your list that I like so very much.

Yup, he came and spoke in an OUAB event the night of the HIMYM season premiere this year, brought the episodes with him, and let us watch them commercial-free before anyone else. He is by far the most interesting speaker I've ever seen, and one of my favorite Ohioans. And he's still a HUGE Buckeye fan.

Really, really cool guy, and a great ambassador for the Columbus area.

I know this is an OSU site...but come on.  Owens ran really fast at the Olympics to shove it in Hitler's face.  The Wright brother's invention just allowed us to bomb the shit out of Europe during WWII.

Is there even a reason why there was a 24 hour runoff?  Still salty over the NCAA loss to Dayton?  Thought so...

-6 HS
TheBadOwl's picture

I really doubt anyone here is still upset over the Dayton loss.

Besides, as DJ pointed out yesterday, this is a contest to crown the Greatest Ohioan. By definition, the Wright Brothers are two Ohioans.

The fact that Eleven Warriors staff members were endorsing Owens after the start of the 24 hour runoff does seem quite suspicious...

Ohio State beat Michigan by 1 point, I guess that game should have went in Overtime as well.

It's an online poll. Jesse Owens was a total badass. So were the Wright bros. Is this really a big deal?

If DJ didn't feel like the award should go to a pair of brothers because that would make the Greatest Ohioan plural rather than singular, then maybe, I don't know -- and I'm just spitballin' here -- they shouldn't have been in the bracket in the first place!! Or separate them, have an Orville vs. Wilbur play-in game to determine which brother was the important/greater one. I'm not a Dayton guy (Cleveland west side born/raised), but no athlete -- even one as incredible and as politically impactful as Jesse Owens -- is greater than the inventor(s) of manned, powered flight. I'm not salty about it, just explaining why I think some people are objecting.

JakeBuckeye's picture

Assuming based on your name and avatar that you're one of those lovely kind of fans that is scared to completely claim Dayton as "your" school so you conveniently root for OSU in football but Dayton in basketball when the year is right?

But yeah man, 11W is out to get Dayton and staged a loss for the Wright Brothers in the final round of a fictional voting tournament.

+2 HS
CGroverL's picture

I'm a Buckeye fan and bleed as much scarlet and gray as you can for someone being born in Dayton and not attending The Ohio State University. I assure you that we members of Buckeye Nation are not still salty over the loss to the Flyers. However, I would like to say that since I wanted the winner to be a single person instead of a duo, I wanted Owens to win above the Wright Brothers that seem to have my entire home city named after them in one way or another. Also...being that I am both a Buckeye fan AND was born in Dayton, I think that Brady Hoke should be on the list of "worst" Ohioans. Any man born in Dayton that claims to be a "M*ch*gan Man" while calling our beloved school simply "Ohio" after taking control of that Cesspool up north, should be banned from the state and they should even make the area over our state a "no-fly zone" for them.....ANY MAN....UGH!!!

Anyway...since you did come to OUR site, the least you could do is act like it is our site as beating Dayton or losing to Dayton is only as big as YOU make it. Surely if our Buckeyes had beaten Dayton, our players would not have jumped up and down at center court like they were going to Disney World. Contrary to popular belief, we Buckeye fans have tons of class. What makes people think otherwise is people like you that come here and talk garbage. Congratulations on your win and run. It was much deserved for the great teams the Flyers have had as of late. Good luck to you and your Flyers...I'm sure our squads will meet soon, our players will want revenge, will get it, and will quickly shake hands and congratulate your Flyers on a hard fought game before they head to the locker room. "Thought so"??? Very nice....shows you have lots of class...

I apologize to all Buckeye fans and "11W NUTS". I know that you would have rather that I left this Flyer fan alone, but being that he started his comment by announcing that this is an OSU site and ended it with his classy "thought so"....I couldn't help myself. Again...my sincere apologies as I know that this is or should be against the rules of Buckeye fans here.

"I hope they're last in everything"

Thanks, Urb!

I don't get this shoving it in Hitler's face thing. They only had 20 total metals four years earlier so winning the "36" Olympics by so much was a victory. Losing a few events wasn't a big deal, only to us. It must have been amusing to Jesse to have Hitler congratulate him and FDR snub him because of southern votes. We all talk about Hitler's superior race and yet Jesse had to live off campus and eat and sleep away from the team during away events. His jobs while attending OSU had to be out of sight of white people. So the lesson of the master race wasn't learned back home and it was shoved back in his face on his return. He said he was dressed up paraded around but nobody would give him a job. I hope the next time we list real Ohioans it's listed so we can included people like Jimmy Brown since we snuck in Jesse.

Look up gold metalist by state and he is listed as from Alabama. The site said Ohioans. He is a great human being ,American and a buckeye. He was there until he was nine. If it was where they did great things then Jim brown and Johnny Bench would be Ohioans and Lincoln would be from DC. We are the only ones who think he is ours. Stating facts is not being angry. By your responses you've got nothing but insults.

-1 HS

No. We spelled out the rules when we announced the event: a) born in Ohio, b) graduated high school in Ohio or c) spent the majority of their adult life in Ohio.

Also, what does a pole have to do with anything?

Guess I missed that.

Owens never stepped foot on a track  until after his move to Ohio when he was 9 & never left Ohio. Who gives a crap if Alabama claims him? My grandfather was born in Alabama & moved here after the War - & lived hear for 60 years. I think that makes him an Ohioan.
