Christian Bryant Named Permanent Captain of 2013 Football Buckeyes

By DJ Byrnes on April 28, 2014 at 1:44p

In its 124 year history, Ohio State football has only named 254 captains. Today, Christian Bryant was canonized.

He joins Philly Brown, Jack Mewhort, Kenny Guiton, CJ Barnett, and Corey Linsley  as permanent captains of last year's team.

Bryant was injured during the fourth quarter of OSU's victory over Wisconsin, but Meyer has always raved about his leadership and admitted he knew OSU was in trouble when the senior went down.

Bryant was denied a medical redshirt waiver and will attempt to catch on with an NFL team.

Can't believe not honoring him was even an option.

I still can't believe Ryan Shazier is not on this list... He has been the top defensive player the past two seasons... really the only thing we could count on week in and week out.

Incentive for not bolting for the NFL early. (Not to say he shouldn't have, but if you want your name on that list...)

Just... Go Bucks.

If you are RDS, you have to take the money (which should be large on number of tackles alone regardless of him being "undersized"). However, Shazier might have walked away with major college awards including a possible National Title in the 2014 season. On top of that, he could have possibly doubled his money by staying in Columbus, adding 15 pounds and keeping his tackle numbers close to his 2013 numbers. He faced a tough decision, but I say that you have to take the money when you can get it and he did the right thing. The one thing we will never know is what a 235 to 240 pound Ryan Shazier was capable of at the college level. Sure, adding weight would slow him a bit, but he may have been the fastest 220 pound LB in pads in all of CFB last season.

I think that he should have been a captain, too...but 3 or 4 members of the OL made it where both Carlos Hyde and Braxton Miller combined for 2,589 yards last season and truly LED the Buckeyes last season. On top of that (since I'm a "stat guy"), Braxton Miller, being a QB in an option offense where the WR's sometimes don't even know what they are supposed to do until after Miller takes the snap and makes his first read, should have a large total sack number...In 2014, Miller was sacked only 21 times. That number is relatively small when you run Urban Meyer's spread option. Miller was sacked 39 times in 2011 and 28 times in 2012...The OL just got better and better even though the spread option was first installed in 2012. The OL as a unit was the reason why the running game was so good and the passing game had a chance. The good news is that Ohio State's OL truly is reloading and should be close to what they were last season.

"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.

Good points, and I agree with you on all except that he could have possibly doubled his money with another year in college. And again your points are legitimate, except that most projections I've seen has RDS as the #2 OLB behind only K-Mack (who we all know first hand is a beast) plus Shazier has been tagged lately as a fast riser on draft boards. But you're right I guess that he may have been able to have forced his way into a "can't pass on" 1st rounder instead of the 2nd best prospect for a team in need. Either way, he'll be making a lot more money in a month than I could hope to. Best of luck to the young man.

Here's a link to CFBnews' analysis-they pit him as a Pro-Bowl Starter.

Just... Go Bucks.

Philly Brown twice?  Nice.

I don't think anyone particular cares...FIVE MONTHS after the season.

Does everyone realize that the 2013 season is over. I love Urban, but this is just bizarre.

Another case of dementia, Oh I forgot. Man this is a PR disaster. This guy needs an agent. GO BUCKS!

I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

Let's see about making him a 2014 Cap'n....COME ON NC-DOUBLE, ONE MED REDSHIRT TO GO.

It's especially puzzling that Philly Brown made it while RDS didn't. Makes no sense to me.

I can't believe it was even an option not to make Christian Bryant a permanent captain. Our secondary collapsed after we was injuried and we lost his leadership on the field. He would have been my number two choice behind Jack Mewhort.

We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.

You release the official captains list 4 months after the season is over, then a week later you add another name to that list....... I love Urban, but this stuff is just weird.

I could be wrong, but to have to wait this long to release your official captains may show the lack of clear leadership on that team in the first place.

Must be just me. Why is OSU even talking about LAST year's football captains all the time?  Seems insane. Let's go over the play calling against San Diego State and Florida A&M while we are at it.

Our coach my senior year did rotating captains, different ones every week.  I hated it.  Pick your leaders and be done with it.  Its like the old saying, if you have two quarterbacks, you don't have any quarterbacks.  Congrats to CB, though.

I sure Hope Christian Bryant gets  that medical red shirt!

Every time I set my DVR to record Biggest Loser......It always records Wolverine Football Games!

That was denied a while ago. Another bit of justice for a student athlete by the iNeptCAA.
