Report: Greg Oden Facing Felony Charge After Allegedly Punching Ex-Girlfriend in the Face

By Patrick Maks on August 11, 2014 at 3:22p

Update (5:45 PM): The affidavit of the incident is in the public realm via Yahoo!'s Dan Devine, and the details aren't good.

After allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend in the face last week, Greg Oden is facing a felony charge, according to the Indianapolis Star. More from the report:

"Oden, 26, was charged in Marion Superior Court today with one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and battery resulting in bodily injury. His felony offense carries a penalty of one to six years behind bars.”

The former Ohio State star and No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft was arrested last Thursday outside of Indianapolis and charged with battery. From the Star's original report:

“Police ‘observed blood, swelling to the nose, lacerations to the forehead and nose area of the victim's face,’ according to the (police) report. They also ‘observed blood on the sofa and floor in the sitting area. (They) observed (blood) on the living room carpet (and) dirt from a flower pot that was knocked over.’”

Oden is a free agent after playing for the Miami Heat last season.

What would you like me to say? Obviously this is a sad situation for both the young lady and Greg, I didn't think I needed to point that out. With his past health struggles and his recent ability to stay healthy, I was hoping he could continue his career in the NBA. With these events, however, that will not be happening. I hope they both get the help they need. (better?)

I to wanted to see him finally get to play meaningful time in the NBA. Kind of reminded me of Bill Walton and what he went through his first years in the league. He finally won in Portland and won another in Boston in 86 then he was done. As far as domestic violence goes, for the man you gotta leave the area, just get out!!!!!! And get a new woman, that's it!!!!

I just thought it was odd, UFest, that after Oden commits a felony that you wished he could have played for the Cavs. That's all. Had you said this last week in some other thread, it would have been different. Timing is everything, I guess.

update: sorry. Meant to say that he allegedly committed a felony.

I'm with you. My timing has never been spot on. Probably why I live in a van down by the river.

This story is just sad. I never would have expected this from him. Innocent until proven guilty, of course, but he pretty much admitted his crime to the arresting officers. Just very, very sad.

Unbelievable.  One of the last current or former Buckeye athletes that I'd ever expect to see in this position.

his explanation of what happened was way better than ray rice's bs excuse. only difference must be rice's (now wife) wouldn't press charges and oden's former girlfriend must be going forward with this, sad for a former buckeye though.

Initially, I believe it is his ex-gf was unccoperative and declining to pursue charges but it was actually Oden's family member and witness who told police it was a punch

Hate to see you go through this Greg but don't forget you brought it upon yourself. From here out the best thing you can try to do is prove you are a better person than that everyday and focus on getting yourself under control. Good Luck and Go Bucks

I was very critical of what Ray Rice had done, and it pains me to have the same feelings towards this situation. I like the guy, but what Greg did was awful. It's a shame to see it happen.

Violence is never the a lover not a fighter, always worked for me.

Seems like he is owning his actions, but that doesn't undo the harm, Hopefully his victim will be able to heal and move on.

If you feel you have to lay your hands on your woman, it's time to go. Get away from her. The relationship is obviously toxic.

And remember it is never a fair fight. Even if you "win" you'll always feel badly about yourself and others will see you as a lesser man. You end up with a slapped face and she ends up with a broken face. Come on Greg, make a better choice.

Terribly disappointing to hear, I hope she is doing better. Makes me think of the butterfly effect of what if he had been in the Bahamas with some of his former teammates this past week.

I have had some rough relationships but it has never crossed my mind to ever right hook a girl. I don't understand that.

Pretty terrible situation. At least he admitted to the wrong doing and wasn't planning to be a complete POS and deny or make excuses. Obviously doesn't take away from the terrible act, but more often than not people do terrible things than go down fighting it or denying. He accepts what he did, so he does have some humanity.

Sad to hear this. Was in Greg's corner after recovery from the knee surgeries. Can't say I can abide anyone hitting a woman. Not cool Oden.

There is no excuse.  It's sad, and disappointing for fans, more tragic for the victim and family.  Out of control and totally deserves to be punished for his crime.
